Induction hobs with built in ventilation - advice needed

We are looking at purchasing an induction hob with built-in ventilation/extraction for our new kitchen peninsula, which will also have a breakfast bar with 3-4 barstools.

We’re currently looking at three models:
- Miele KMDA 7774 FL
- Siemens EX875LX34E
- BORA Basic

We would love to hear your experience with any of these, or hear about other high quality models that we should be considering.

How effective are they? Also how quiet and easy to clean?

There aren’t many reviews out there, so any advice would much appreciated, as they are a significant investment.

Hi Susanna, our designers received some training from Bora just yesterday and without a doubt the brand is far superior than others. It is often more expensive than others but we always advise our clients that a good extractor is worth the extra pennies in a new kitchen especially if you are creating a large living / kitchen space. It is also very easy to clean as are most induction hobs. The extractor filter can be lifted out of place and popped into the dishwasher...simple! If you do decide to purchase the Bora model its incredibly important that you or your designer ensures that the correct ducting is put in place to ensure the best efficiency of the appliance. Bora provide their own which we always recommend to use. Assuming that the correct duct etc is put in place the Bora will be a very quiet appliance to run. Good luck with your kitchen!

Hi guys, Leelee we are definitely doing the vintage bits on the wall. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. I will have to paint the patch when it's off.

@Norwood Architects took the words right out of my mouth. I too would not do the open shelves on the base cabinets with the clipped corner. Looks like you are going for a more modern kitchen and those don't fit the updated style I see here. As far as the double ovens, I would move them to the left one spot so they sit next to the first set of cabinets. I would also remove the last upper cabinet (on the right) and extend the open shelving. The shelves look dwarfed as they are now by the large wall of cabinets. Hopefully, removing a bank of upper cabinet and extending the shelves will help balance the proportions. I would also eliminate the shelves on the island too, but that's just more of a personal preference ;) Looks like it's going to be a gorgeous kitchen!

I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. I'm embarking on the same thing and have spent hours and hours researching!

Hi Ed I was struck by the similarity with our new kitchen layout. We recently renovated and I absolutely did not want either an overhead extractor (because I wanted to raise the ceiling), but also did not want to cut expensive quartz for a pop-up extractor which all seem to give trouble eventually and basically don't work! The solution was a German-made Bora induction hob with the downdraft in the middle of the hob. I have to say that it was the best investment we made! Ours could not be ducted outside (which is always the best option) without losing too much efficiency so we went for a filtration system. It works even better than I thought removing all smells and grease! It was really well worth the money. ...and no ugly hood blocking the view out! Watch the videos on the website - it actually does work exactly like that! They also do different options where you have gas on one side and induction hob on the other with the extractor in a panel between the two. Definitely an investment! You really do need extraction though as Fiona said. Strong cooking smells will will be absorbed into your furniture and soft furnishings in an open plan area. The best of luck with your project. I hope you love the end result as much as we love ours.

Hi Susanna - I'm in the process of making the same decision. Any insights would be appreciated as there's still not much information out there about the new-ish models by some of the more traditional manufacturers.

Hi Evan,

In the end we went for the Miele version, as it was significantly cheaper than Bora (purchased from the Midle outlet near Oxford), and we liked it better than the Samsung version. However, we haven’t used it yet, as our kitchen is still being built! It should be installed in a few weeks.

We love it! We’ve been using it since early September and have no complaints. It is really easy to clean and looks great. The extraction is quiet and effective. Would definitely recommend.

Thank you so much for the update Susanna, that‘s really useful feedback. Do you have it to extract outside or recirculate inside? We want to install on an island and have concrete floors and ceilings, but concerned about it not clearing smells. Any insight you can offer would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Hi Luke, thank you for providing the link to the recent review of the Bora product range. Bora certainly gets the thumbs up from The Kitchen Guy, it’s a great review. Can you let me know when the newer model of the classic will be available in the UK please, which he refers to in his article, as that is currently my preferred model? We are more than happy to hold off our purchase, if there’s a newer/improved model on the way.

Hi smshawe, ours is extracted outside, as it is installed on a peninsula rather than an island. It works perfectly in terms of clearing smells etc. Unfortunately I can't comment on how it works without an external vent.

We have just ordered this one from Novy http://www.novy.com/products/detail/1821-novy-panorama we tested it in the kitchen showroom and it did work really well. It looks beautiful too.

I agree look at Novy.com - amazing quality - happy to give you the my contact at Novy in the UK - also we fitting a Miele one in Jan - you can always come to Abingdon to the Miele centre and use the product in their showroom. ( they also have a clearance part where items are returned from the likes of John Lewis damaged box! so gets rejected ) My customer saved 40% on the REAL selling price - they were very happy - Hopes that helps - will up date once we have fitted the Miele one in Jan

Thinkdoors - Quality Kitchen Doors, would be interested to hear how the Miele performs once installed, will it be recirculation? Thank you for the tip about the Miele showroom and sell off. Do they actually cook food on the hob or just demonstrate steam being extracted, definitely worth a trip across there to see it in action?

Hi both are quality products - we fitting the Miele one at the end of the month so soon will see how good it is from the customers point of view. Only thought Novy have been making over 50 years and offer 5 year warranty - everything they do is quality. What I do like its easy to clean - very simple which I think is great these days. I think you would be happy with both - so will be down to price and how it looks for your kitchen. Hope this helps a bit. Thanks Simon

Hi Thinkdoors, have you fitting any more Novy 1821's and what has been the feedback.

I went to the Ideal Home Exhibition on 24.03.19 and Cooks & Company based in Nottingham gave the a prime space on the showcase and the product does look great and very clean in amodern kitchen, ony issue is I cannot find anything about it in the UK interms of independant reviews. Any help would be great.

Just a update on the Miele model. We’ve been using it for 6 months now and absolutely love it. No regrets! Wouldn’t go for another type of extraction.

Just jumping onto this thread … Jan 2022 and we are in very similar position and dilemma or will be soon , has there been any developments or new products or even different brands we should be looking at .. it still seems to be limited to info as to pricing and what is out there … I do know there are now much cheaper generic brands and similar products but I also know some of these will no way be good as what has been described on here

For us it’s getting a good product at a mid range price …

I suspect the bora product maybe out of our price range though it has a very good rep.

I heard seimen are now doing one .. anyone out there own one ?

Can anyone please tell me where the Miele demo showroom is exactly to view their product ?

On the a40 near Oxford somewhere ? ..

Just to update everyone we are still very happy with the Miele model 3 years later. We bought it from the Miele outlet in Abingdon so it was significantly cheaper than the sticker price.

That’s great to hear … is it reasonably quiet and do they actually do what say on the tin so to speak … you have had for 3 years so a good guide as you no doubt have put it through it paces

we are having to go down this route because of various restrictions we have and design hurdles with installing

It’s not silent by any means but it’s not as loud as a lot of extractors we’ve heard. It does suck steam and cooking odours away, and it looks really nice. The fan comes on and increases power as pans get to cooking temperature, but if you’re not fond of that it’s easy enough to turn back down. The vent and filter are east to remove and pop in the dishwasher and it’s as good as new after three years.

I went for the Bora classic 2.0 in the end. Highly recommended. No issues, although the after service has been good.

Yes easy to clean, can put the filter in a dishwasher. The noise comes from underneath, it's not quite, but I wouldn't say the noise is too much

Hi. A year on…we have just had a novy easy recirculating 1861 put in. It’s pretty impressive. Our dilemma is that the installation manual says you should have a grille type exit point in the plinth ( as does the German help line) but our kitchen company has said we don’t need one. They do have it on email record from the novy rep that actually you don’t need one so now we don’t know what to do. The design line would be ruined by cutting a grille into the plinth and anyway there is a gap above the plinth everywhere so air gets out. However, we wonder if not putting one in would invalidate the five year warrantee. Any advice please?

Hi Morsenet! I’m considering getting the Novy 1861 too and supplier also said no grill required for the outgoing air. I wonder did you ever find out anything definitive about the guarantee if there is no grill outlet?? Also, do you still love it??? It’s a big investment and is it really as quiet and effective as they say it is?? Any lingering kitchen smells???

Hi I have the Novy Panorama 1841. I am not sure about the grille type exit point but we don't have one. The previous owners had the kitchen fitted. The unit is less than 3 years old. The right side of the hob is flashing errors and it has taken over 7 working days to get an engineer to come and replace the board. The hob is brilliant when working and really quiet. I think the aftersales service (through Aga Rangemaster) is far from efficient. With the Brexit delays you would think they might stock a few spart parts to mitigate the delays. Its been two weeks without a hob. A five year guarantee is excellent. I could recommend the product but not the aftercare.
