Tone it down (Red)

One of the things I loved most about our house when we moved in were the solid wood interior doors. However, the previous owners stained them this really odd color, almost like a light cherry. They read strawberry blonde. Initially, I was going to paint them white, but realized that they would lose some of their unique charm. However, is there an easy way I can tone down the red? We have traditional honey oak floors and dark espresso cherry furniture throughout. The espresso would be too dark for the doors I think. I wish they were a nice neutral provincial stain. could I do a gel stain over them, or would the red scream through it? What do you recommend?
