Black kitchen cabinets

Hi There,

I am renovating my kitchen and love black kitchen cabinetry. I am leaning towards contemporary style, slab door - all black with white quartz worktop. I am a little concerned about maintenance of black cabinets- also should l go for painted or laminate or some other finish?

I am happy to pay to get a durable finish that won't scratch over time. Does anyone know the best material to go for? Has anyone experience with black cabinets and if so, what material are they and how do you find them? Do you regret putting in dark cabinets?

I understand black will absorb light but that is ok for the space I have. I am just concerned about scratches, keeping clean etc over time.

Thanks in advance for any tips, advice... things to watch out for.

Black is a notoriously hard colour to keep clean, especially in a kitchen area. I would suggest using a laminate, especially if you are going for a slab door. There are a variety of effects that may be suitable. It has the best advantages of being easy to clean and durable, avoid gloss colours if you are worried about scratch marks. Paint on the other hand will give a different effect, it depends on what you are trying to achieve. However paint will require maintenance, darker colours more regularly.

We are building an extension to our house to include a larger kitchen and open plan dining and living room. In our kitchen we are having a large island (3.5 metres long). On the back wall we will have tall kitchen cabinets. We love the look of flat island units but prefer shaker style for the tall units. Can you mix styles? Would anyone like to share their opinions on this?
