In need of balcony shade

We recently fixed up our balcony and now we need to figure out how to incorporate some shade. The picture above is the balcony before the railing was installed. It’s not a large space. I was considering putting an awning over the door since that area of the house is exposed to a lot of sun. Any thoughts?

Comments (3)I would grow one or two evergreens in pots so you have some winter interest and then, depending on how sunny your balcony is in summer, try some herbs as previously suggested and also tubs of edibles such as tomatoes and strawberries. Depends how much time you have to look after the plants. 6 years agoI would talk to the people who did your iron railing and see if they could add some poles you could attach canvas sail panels to. I think yellow would be pretty addition. Here are some additional ideas.
