Has anyone put oven in pantry ?

Since my kitchen is open plan and next to the lounge . I am concern with the smell and fume when use oven. As with current home when I use oven , specially roasting, the smell travels to the entire house , include bedrooms. The possible locations of oven is either inside pantry or out side pantry and the two location is just a wall apart. But with inside pantry , I can close the door and since I will have exhaust fan in pantry , I can draw the smell out without it travel to out side of pantry . Appreciate any thoughts or experience cooking in open plan kitchen .

I have not put one in the pantry nor have I ever seen one in the pantry. A good quality oven should not cause any concern of fumes only delicious smells.

Don't think locking it in the Pantry is a good idea, too much heat. Do you have a deck that you could use a hooded BBQ

That's looking a lot better. A few followup comments: 1. I agree with bepsf that the opening to the dining (formerly living) from the entry should be an "archway" or similar opening. A pair of pocket doors would work or make sure the french doors can open 180 degrees and stay out of the way. Similarly, I'd add an opening (with french doors if you must) on the other side of the fireplace to match the ones you have. 2. I'd flip the door to the utility room to the left so it aligns with the exterior door. Much more efficient use of space OR (better yet) flip the exterior door to the east and move the countertop to the other side. This way the door won't be as visible from the entry, you'll get more countertop, and the flow will be better. 3. Sitting room - if you need to keep the entrance from the front hall, why not move the fireplace to the southeast corner, flip the couch to the north wall and use this as your formal living room (and no door). The flow into the room will be much better. It also gives you much better use of the bay window. Then you can use the room now labeled "living room" as your more informal sitting/family room. 4. Squeezing past the shower to enter the powder room is still awkward. 5. Kitchen - it looks like the island (I assume that's what's in the middle) should move to the west to give yourself enough space to have a usable counter on the east wall. 4'6" is a pretty good distance between counters.. You seem to have more space than you need between the island and the patio doors. There's also a lot of inefficient space between the fireplace and island. I'd make sure that there's either enough room for a small table, or just make the island and east wall cabinets longer. 6. One last thought - since you rearranged the use of the rooms, had you considered switching between the dining and living? I think this would make things work even better. aaah ! makes sense now - hey any one can grow parsley, basil or thyme ! you can buy them in pots in the supermarket when (and if) you kill them !!! my husband thinks I have green fingers because our herbs always look great !!! little does he know I replace them monthly !!! lol !! and a sprig looks great on tinned soup, that you can then claim you cooked from scratch too !!!

I would definitely go for a larger kitchen therefore a swap. Also if structure allows to remove this little bit of unnecessary wall by current kitchen entrance would make the space more open.( I think in the other plan I see it is happening?) the outside door swap for a window is a very good idea in my mind.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Hi there, yes I have put ovens into butlers' pantries on a few occasions, and I'm most likely going to install an under bench unit in my new home as well. The thing to remember is that ventilation is key here. You need plenty of airflow PLUS a great exhaust system. I am assuming this is a large pantry you're talking about, not the small variety?

Yes , it is a walking in pantry with have two opening windows , and a full size sink . I don't know if the ventilation in my current kitchen poor done or what . ( no exhaust fan in kitchen ) The smell travels to the bedrooms when I had the oven on for roasting . And no I dont mind the smell of baking a cake in lounge . But roasting meat and smelling it in the Bedroom is not form me .

I'd be very concerned about ventilation and overheating in the pantry. I think I'd be exploring options for getting an exhaust fan into the kitchen itself first.

ventilation is the key...windows and exhaust fans! I'd be worried about heat buildup in the pantry..

I love cooking smells, especially roasts, fish is the one that gets me though. We roast outside in hooded Webber mainly because it gives such a great flavour. My worry would be be I might forget or not hear oven buzzer if out of site and no cooking aromas .. I can usually tell when something is cooked by the smell

There will no doubt be regulations as to the area that the oven can be installed. It wouldnt surprise me if council didnt allow such an install due to fire risks. It is important also to think of safety measures for the oven, will it be easily accessible for taking food in and out with the pantry door? As a short I struggle as is to remove hot food from a standard oven, let along having to negotiate another door before I can put the tray/pot down. Best of luck

Surely there is a rangehood over your hotplates? If you have a rangehood I don't think there is anything poorly done with your kitchen ventilation. I do not believe adding an exhaust fan would be sufficient to avoid cooking smells.

So your pantry is a butlers pantry with its own windows?

I have seen some large butlers pantries in display homes that are almost like a second kitchen. If your pantry is like that and it has windows and sufficient space to install an oven and sufficient nearby benchspace to make it workable I do not see why you could not have it done.

If your butlers pantry is not suitable to use as a second kitchen which can be both closed off and adequately ventilated, then maybe the Webber on the patio type idea might be worth looking into?

Yes, the pantry is 2.4mx 3.4m size , with two windows . Bench around walls . Cabinet below bench with open shelves above bench. There is also exhaust fan install in the ceiling . Whats why thinking moving he oven into pantry .

Your 'pantry' is the size of some people's kitchens. So use it as your kitchen if it suits your lifestyle I say.
