Staircase and hallway make over with wall panelling.

The original staircase hallway needed an injection of warmth and elegance.

The existing panelling detail was reflected in the new addition.

The new panelling in place blends in beautifully with the existing, all now painted in the same colourway.

Now a warm and welcoming entrance to this traditional home.

I agree that the new paneling balances the proportions of the room and the end result is elegant.
But in these pictures the room looks anything but warm.

I'd look for something that looks great with the irisses in the windows, the colors at least. Something Art Nouveau or Art Deco, botanical, floral. Metallic silver/beige will reflect lots of light. But I would leave the low stairs' walls (rail) as they are (painted offwhite) and only paper on the high wall leading up and the wall without stairs (opposite side). If the wall is in good shape, no need for complete paneling, just use a chair rail and paper the part above it. Or do you want planks/panels to show?

A niche would be a good way to add some drama without infringing on your circulation space. It doesn't have to be deep to be effective. You can do one simple vertical rectangle, and line the back with a mirror, or add some colour with paint, wallcovering or wood. It would be great if you could also add a recessed light fixture at the top. The attached images are perhaps too busy for your situation, but it gives you a good idea of what can be done. Good luck!

We've done some wall panelling along the stairs and for some reason it doesn't work the way I planned it. It makes hallway look cluttered, and sort of "jump" right on you when you come in, as this is the first thing you see in the house (photos are taken from the entrance). It's not painted yet ( just primed), and probably will look slightly better when all painted the same colour, but still feels wrong. I wonder, is it because the squares are too small? Boards too thick? Should I leave wider space between vertical boards? Any ideas how to make it look better? All advices are highly appreciated. Thanks.

That oak was beautiful. Now it might as well be MDF.
