Need color scheme tips

I whitewashed my fireplace. Walls are a pale gray and debating on what color to paint mantle and shelf to left of fireplace (I'm thinking white? Shelf is wooden but primed right now). Also, wanting to possibly paint the orange ceramic tiles...is this even possible? Not sure what kind of paint to use....Carpet will be slate gray.

I would remove the shelving to the left of the fireplace it throws the balance off in the room and as for the mantel I would leave it just the way it is. Klenk makes an epoxy paint for tile

I think your idea for painting the mantel/shelf white is great. A nice bright white would pop and tie things together nicely. I agree with Patricia that the balance in the room is off, but if you aren't up for removing the shelving you can balance the room with a large plant and perhaps some larger decorative pots/vases or maybe even a freestanding bookcase. Paint the wood floor with a flooring paint. If you want to be creative, you can create your own special design. I've had painted wood floors in a previous home and everyone loved them. If you get tired of it, paint them a different color! Saves doing rip out and better for the environment! My floors held up well. I was surprised. I even did a faux marble floor for fun.

Hi Orla. I've looked at your ideabook and assume you're happy to stick with the monotone look? I'd look at papering the ŵall behind the bed in Cole and son library panel wallpaper in midnight (pic will follow but it would also look good in a light shade!). The rest of the walls I'd do in a pale but warm grey. Which way does the room face in terms of lights? Go for black bedside cabinets but maybe something with curved lines or round handles against the bed. Either glass bedside lamps with white shades or in a warm metal or pendants hung low over the bedsides, Stick to white bed linen but add a charcoal throw with lots of texture. Choose cushions with different texture and patterns from White through to charcoal. Depending on what flooring you have you could also add a grey textured rug under the bed. I'd go for plain pale-mid grey curtains. If you have the space/budget a patterned black/grey and white chair would look great. I think the key thing is texture for interest so maybe also a large antiqued mirror, a chandelier with a silk drum shade, white flowers etc.

I would not paint the mantle or tiles. You need some contrast or risk having a flat white/pale grey wall. Remove the corner shelf; it does nothing for the room. Interested to see what cabinetry and furniture you select. Contemporary?

I would not paint mantle. The contract against the brick is nice. Would paint the cabinets to the left same color as the wall color to have them blend into the space and not have the wall seem one sided. A rich blue would be a nice accent color to space in regards to curtains/fabrics in the space. You could leave tile as is or paint same color as floor.
