7 years agoAdding coffered beams to the ceiling would add interest and relate the room to the strong columns at the entrance to the dining room. There is already a flare to your ceiling but it's too subtle to notice.

Comments (9)Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? Comments (1)Hi, what a lovely "canvas" to begin! My late husband loved wood. I think it is too drab and have changed mine for glass and various off whites as the rooms are non-square here and the house is old but takes modern too. My gut feeling is that the way forward is to choose an exciting "theme" for downstairs first. Would you consider bright and airy sky, or tropical, or geometric, or bookish, or carnival, or countryside, what about a space rocket on the wall for the kids - it can be covered when they grow tired of it? And as it is it has my pet hate - a good window - wasted - with a grim reminder of housework - a sink in front of it instead of one out of sight with a strip light over it!!!!...See MorePaint colour for kitchen/dining room?

7 years agoI would put a big mirror on wall opposite your art, it will reflect your art and light shade. Change vase in corner with a lighter colour or red. Add some nice bright flowers on your table. Nice area, you have some lovely items

7 years agoYou have done a great job so far. Don't discount a cohesive, well-balanced room of fine furnishings.
A couple of suggestions:
- The drapery panels at the entrance are not working for me. They just seem to emphasize the demarcation line of the room and don't work with the architecture of the home IMO.
- To define the space, I would paint the walls the linen color of your drapery panels. I would install moulding on the ceiling, and select a raffia color for that area to complement your host chairs.
- I think the room needs some reference to nature so I have added a faux tree in a red Chinese Fishbowl in the corner for texture & small architectural topiaries on your stunning buffet. I would also add buffet lamps since there appears to not be any downlights in the ceiling. Picking up the red from your print on the table with red ceramic pieces help finish the room. The glare on the print is distracting. I would have suggested a linen matted and framed canvas to help with the texture in the room.

- The room needs something on the other wall. In keeping with the mood of the room, I'm recommending some type of handmade wood/handicraft with circular forms. If not that, then perhaps a metal structure in circular form. The room needs the texture and relief from rectangles.

i know it is kinda bright, but sorta gives that african vibe. if you can squint maybe we can see how it might work.

7 years agoThe dining room is a really important room: what ultimately makes it exciting is that we spend a lot of time in it -- eating with people we care about, talking, and making memories. When we do that, we're using the dining room to its full degree.
Looking at those beautiful walls in your room, as well as abundant natural light from the windows, I would suggest adding artwork, and since you're feeling that the room is blah (possibly because it's highly neutral in its overall coloration), get brave and add some colorful wall art.
Generally, when people are told to add colorful wall art, they think, "Oh, I've got to get an abstract! That's colorful," without realizing that finely painted representational artwork incorporates not only color, but strong emotion and feeling, because the viewer can connect to it somehow -- be it a landscape, ocean view, figurative work, or floral piece.
Do you like the ocean? The find a coastal piece. How about hiking? Then look for mountains. Do you want something inspirational and hopeful? Then look for something that makes you feel that way. If you're spending the time in the dining room that the room demands, then you'll be looking at whatever art you get, a lot.
Original or print? That depends upon your budget, as well as the art piece you decide upon. The ultimate factor is that you love the work, and it brings you pleasure every time you see it. Do not allow anyone to pressure you into buying a piece simply because it matches the rest of your decor. Artwork can do so much more than match.
