Weeding large area

Bought my house a month ago. Previous owners let the vegetable garden go once we had a signed contract. It is full of weeds now.

I want to take some time to really plan things out. I'm thinking about filling it with raised beds.

I guess my first step is to get rid of the weeds. What's the best way to do that to a 45'x40' area?

It depends on the kind of weeds. Covering it with cardboard could help.

I don't think it's that they let it go (on purpose) as much as it was that they were busy with their move. If the garden condition wasn't mentioned in the contract, we could hardly blame the previous owner for leaving a garden area unattended. Based on the pictures, it just looks like a fenced off section of grassy area, but maybe that is what you mean by letting it go.

However, regardless of the reason, for such a large space, I would make sure there aren't any pipes that can be affected, then rent a tiller and go through the area.

Either that or, using hand tools, work up small sections at a time, such as a 4x4 area. As you mentioned that you might want raised beds, you know that you don't have to till up or weed up the entire 45x40 area.

We mix treatments in the same room all the time, but this must be done carefully; be sure the color of the solid fabric coordinates nicely with the print and you should be fine as long as you "tie them together" - perhaps use the printed fabric of the roman to make a small simple valance to cover the headrail of the roller shades. You could also use the solid fabric as a banding along the sides and bottom or the roman.

Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Sorry, but I don't care for the bookcase idea in an entrance. I also noticed the masks you have, and think it would be great to decorate the space using them as inspiration. Here is a photo to show you the kind of rug I think would work here.

you could try this http://www.perfectheadboards.ie Never used them though. I work in an interiors store and we do custom headboards when the job/client requires it. Usually the process is selection of fabric and i believe our upholster works with a someone who does the woodwork side to create a board and between them the headboard gets created. Not sure exactly the steps but if you speak to upholster i am sure they would have someone they recommend in your area. Where are you based?

As you've got the Abbey Road sign, why not make it a music corner? Perhaps a Beatles inspired / Sixties monochrome scheme. You could get a musical notes design printed on an outdoor canvas for the wall, or a sail & hang over to create shade. Perhaps some instrument outlines on the wall. Planting could be black & white with pops of colour. A decorative white chair & outdoor rug would look inviting. Or you could even paint boards b&w stripes like the zebra crossing!

I don't know if they let it go on purpose but they were tending to it when we saw the house. I had a garden at my previous home that I continued to tend to until the home was sold as I wanted to keep the house in the original condition. But I sometimes forget that not every seller is as diligent as I am. House was pretty well cleared out the month prior to closing when we came for inspections. We were also left with a yard infested with fleas. Just a bit disappointed at how some things were handled. But it will all work out. Will most likely do raised beds.

Covering the entire area with large black plastic sheeting typically found at big box stores, will deprive the entire area of sun, water, and air. Keep in place for as long as possible... even throughout the winter. The weeds will die back all the way to their roots. Seeds in the ground will also be distressed and will die. Then you can dig or till the area and add in compost to allow for fall or spring planting.
