Off centre rangehood and oven

Hi there,
My builder has put a microwave recess in my kitchen it's and in doing so it's put everything out of centre without advising me of this (naive, uneducated first home builder) I wanted to put over head cabinets beside the rangehood but it's I think it'll look stupid as one side is 600 the other 540.
Any suggestions to make this not so noticeable of look good??

Hi Julie, I know where you're coming from with storage. Your space will look alright when you get the microwave in it'll balance the oven/stove area out as it'll block out the area - it's that your eye is seeing a huge contrast between the oven and the cabinetry. Looking at your plans it's indicating in the measurements that the centre line is at 1050mm and your oven is 900mm (split in half is 450mm) leaving you with 600mm either side which is plenty for a microwave as the average microwave is 500-530 wide. Check that the wall that the oven/stove are on are actually 2100mm. If it's not right - make your builder fix it for you and cover costs. Let us know how you get on.

Hi Julie,

How annoying for you. But to be honest I didn't see anything wrong with it until I read what you pointed out. However I think if you put cupboards up there it will definitely be noticeable.

I know I'm so frustrated about it as I've got hardly any cupboard space to put anything :(

Mary, it has been a while since I read the comments. I think you can take your time with growing with your new decluttered kitchen. It is truly beautiful with just the changes. Don't go spend a ton of money, save it and go on a holiday to a state park or something you have always wanted to do. If your friends that you invite over for dinner don't love ...... well just coming over and visiting,.... then oh well. As long as you are happy, but no need to break the bank..... you did great already. I love it, if you do more, please share though? And to bamamom, I so agree with you! My own, awful, claustrophobic kitchen is LESS than 8 ft x 11 ft... yep that tiny and horrible. I have taken out the nasty, dropped ceiling and have the slightly vaulted original one now, but with pipes showing where the HVAC was put in after and then the repiped ones....... I did not know they plumber would do this, much less the others were there.... gag me. And no money to do it up even decent.

I do not have picture of space but the feet and inches are as follows. 78.5 inches wall which should incorporate fridge freezer with boiler on top. This space meets the door and I think the high object would look best in that position. There is a window in centre of this space which I propose putting cupboards over to have extra storage space. I will create extra light to replace window light over the adjoining door. The other wall is 86.5". this wall meets the lounge/dining area with patio door off to terrace. My concern is worktop space, I thought this end might best incorporate the cooker with microwave overhead. I would be most grateful for your help. Regards Teresagolf

Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. I'm embarking on the same thing and have spent hours and hours researching!

he can still move it..to centre it..not hard..just two people and a day to move it that's why he doesn't want to..

my rangehood was overhanging my bench by 5cm because I had a steel beam running along where the rangehood was suppose to be in the end he moved it for me ..he told me it couldn't be done I researched talked to people in the industry came back to him told him it could be done ..got hubby on to him too lol hubby did a sob sob version my wife won't leave me alone if you don't do it lol

My suggestion would be put in a concealed rangehood then you could have overhead cupboards. Of course this depends on finances. Otherwise it doesn't look to bad.

Add a concealed rangehood. With 4 even sized cupboard doors.

That's how I read the plans, 2100, but if you look at the underneath meaurements the microwave recess is 600mm, oven 900mm and the cupboard doors 540mm.

so is it just me or are these plans deceptive ?

The problem is that, if you move the hood it will no longer line up with the oven. Move both, and neither will line up with the sink and underbench cabinets. Maybe you could make a virtue of assymetry by having cabinets on one side of the hood and open shelving on the other.

I had a similar idea to jmm1837 - why not still have one overhead cabinet on each side of the rangehood (same width) with the leftover space on the left hand side as open shelving?

Hi Julie, There's a discrepancy between your front and overhead elevations on your plans. Your front elevation indicates 1050 per side of the centre line - indicating a total length of the wall as 2100 with a 900 oven - effectively leaving you with 600 either side for your microwave and cupboard. Your overhead elevation is looking off - it's indicating 540 cupboard, 900 oven and 600 totalling 2040mm and the combined length on that plan is stating 2040mm. Looks to my amateur eye that there is a hiccup in the plans - head down to site with a tape measure and check what's been built - and talk to your builder about how he read the plans (I'd also be asking why this is the first time I'm seeing any issues).

You could make it look less noticeable by changing the small cupboard doors - just have one door rather than two will help alleviate the look of the 60mm discrepancy.

If you find that it is the plans that are off - I'd go back to whomever drew them up for a quiet word - you won't help yourself but you might stop someone else from having a similar issue.

I think timber open shelves would look great and not highlight the different widths. Alternatively, you could have the cupboards made to the smaller width and place a filler piece against the wall on the microwave side.
