Break down the design issues into smaller pieces: furniture, storage, lighting, decorative elements and accessories. It looks like you have space for one twin but maybe two twin size beds, include a night stand with table lamp, add a tall bookshelf and dresser and a large area rug. There are a zillion wallpapers out there. I like a single, bold pattern on one wall with a matching paint color on the other three walls. Consider a large hanging round paper lantern style instead of the existing overhead light and put it on a dimmer, add a comfy chair so the two of you can read books together at bedtime.

Look for a local art hanger. Most galleries can refer you to one or Google it. Some designers do this too. A professional hanger will have the best solution. I always use a professional to hang special pieces or collector value art. The service is not particularly expensive and so worth it. Saves on holes in the wall too!

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. Are the walls elephants breath and the blind taupe? If so, I would add a taupe bed throw. Kelly hoppen has a few good ones on her website but I can't save the images. A velvet bolster cushion would also look great on the bed. I would add either a bed end stool or chaise sofa at the end of the bed. I've attached a link to one on ebay as it seemed very reasonable and you can change the leg colour. I'd go for plain grey silk curtains, next have some silvery grey one in their ready made range which seem reasonable ( apologies as you've painted but I'd hang the curtain rail higher as it will make the room taller). I'd add matching bedside lamps. A roundish decorative silver mirror over the middle of the headboard would look great. I'd also move the chest to the tv ŵall. I personally would just add art to the right hand ŵall if you're laying in bed, maybe some of the black and white Getty images from John lewis? I'd go for the more girlie ones. They're not particularly cheap but you can always buy the prints and have framed separately. Would love to see the room completely finished as it looks great already
