Make my room more impressive
Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!...See MoreMore of what we have done
Comments (7)Love the open shelves on the island, the layout (assuming the fridge freezer is built in the tall cabinets), cupboards (including the colours), flooring. Not a fan of the colour of the pale worktop - it's too similar to the cabinet colour and looks mismatched. I also think the microwave is too high; should be level with adjoins doors....See Moreneed something to link the window coverings
Comments (15)I think it might work better to have blinds on the wall with the smaller windows (perhaps in a plain colour) and have curtains on the main stretch of windows, using the existing curtains to replace the small roman blinds. This would allow the fantastic view to be the main focus. I do think plain curtains would work well here but you perhaps aren't keen to change them as they are new? Could they be used elsewhere? I also agree re moving the sofas so they aren't at angles, it looks a bit strange. Maybe try them in a u shape around the fire. And perhaps painting the door frame white might make the room feel calmer. Where did you find your lovely footstool btw?...See MoreNeed help for my narrow sitting room
Comments (3)Hello. I see you posted in December, but if you haven't already re-arranged: 1. I agree wholeheartedly about the roman blinds. (Nifty idea to reuse the great fabric of the curtains. I didn't think of that one ) 2. I'd move the armchair to the left of the fireplace where the lovely vase is. Vase under bay window instead maybe? 3. Put the TV on the wall below the framed photos: 90 cm above floor level is a comfortable height for seated viewing. 4. Then the sofa can go on the opposite wall, it's more welcoming when you walk in the door from the hallway. (To the left of the bay window) As for small L-shaped sofas, the smallest I've seen is a sofa bed from IKEA. Very tidy but I've not tested it for comfort. Has integrated storage for bed covers. Neat. 5. Then turn your rug and coffee table 90 degrees, parallel with the fireplace wall and in line with the bay. (Turning the long axis of these items across the width of the room will make it appear wider, especially where you already have the extra width of the bay.) Without dimensions of these items and the room I can't be sure will that fit. But if you're not already sorted I guess it's worth a try....See MoreCrystal Shepherd
