Need help with Kitchen especially pelmet!

I am trying to add to my existing kitchen which is in about 7 years (the maple wood has aged). I am adding two cabinets with stainless steel roller doors - one either side of the cooker hood. I need to add a pelmet to tie the whole look together. I`m putting 5 recessed lights into the pelmet over the window. On the advice of the electrician, I need to have about 4-5 inches of a gap between the top and bottom of pelmet to hide wires etc. I`m thinking of placing the pelmet right up to the ceiling. I`m not sure about the thickness, ot whether to add small cabinets over the window. Will the maple wood be ok? I have a black kickboard under the base cabinets, so this too could be an option. I`ve also a roman blind ordered to soften the look. All advice welcome!

We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! Comments (25)Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. Comments (8)My advice is to visit an independent kitchen showroom. Oftentimes they have access to more standard priced options than the big kitchen firms. Reduced height cabinets can be set at almost any height by wall hanging them, or changing the plinth height or having bespoke feet. Since standing is a challenge I presume you will also need to talk to them about pull out units (all of my crockery is in drawers which is much easier to access) you can also put fridges, ovens etc at any height making them easier to access. You might also look at different oven doors, some slide underneath or open to the side making access to the oven easier. You can get dishwashers the size of a single oven which might be easier to load and of course can be set at any height. If your overall strength is compromised you might choose bigger handles to open cabinets. If you want over counter cabinets you might choose to have reduced depth base cabinets to improve access to the cabinets above. You can get extractors that work with a remote control which helps future proof your kitchen if at a later date you find yourself sitting more or unable to stand....See More- PRO

11 years agoAre you doing a tile backsplash? If so, I agree with dlinteriors, tile the whole wall up around the window. You could add pendant lighting above the sink, maybe glass and stainless to tie in with that great hood. Here's a horizontal one with lots of lights.
