It's always helpful when you present pictures of things you like and when you have pictures of the things you know you don't like. Designers consult usually by the hour and some of us use a flat rate packages.
Pictures are great. Giving a designer this kind of input can actually help to reduce fees since they know up front what your style is. If you are sharing photos, indicate to the designer what in particular you like about the room. That's important.
As to paying hourly, most residential designers only work by the hour. My firm does. You may also find that you can set hours. In other words, ask for a 4 hour consultation.
