In a word, Jose and his crew are responsive. If you want things done correctly and don’t want your project to take forever, Jose is your guy. His crew is friendly, considerate, and they clean up at the end of each day. Would 100% use again for other projects. Jose had solid and creative problem solving ideas for the issues around my property that I wanted addressed. Jose and his crew were very professional, timely and priced reasonable. They updated front and back landscape and hardscape. They also found and repaired an irrigation leak under they driveway that two other contractors could not.

We hired Jose and his company, Exterior Designs Landscape, to renovate our backyard. This was a big job requiring hardscape demolitions, removal of cement, tile, stamped concrete and artificial turf. Exterior Designs designed and installed a new drainage system, new irrigation system and laid a sod backyard that my kids and dogs are now enjoying every day! Our front yard has a new design incorporating beautiful Olive trees, jasmine, bougainvillea, lilac and roses. Jose Castro has been fantastic to work with; he is helpful with ideas and suggestions and receptive to the clients ideas. His workers were very conscientious and left the jobsite neat and organized each evening. Our project stayed close to budget, the only additions were items we asked for afterwards. I’m happy to give Exterior Designs Landscape an excellent rating. Jose Castro (owner) and his crew earned it! I requested an estimate on a landscape project that was way overdue. The front yard needed sprucing up and the backyard hadn’t been maintained for years. We also needed a drainage solution, additional water irrigation, brickwork and cement wall repairs. Jose responded to the request immediately and suggested we work with an architect on the design, which we did. Once the design was finalized the work began. Jose was on site each day to ensure we were happy with the progress and to deal with any issues. The project evolved and Jose implemented any requested change/addition quickly. They even took care to place my bottle trees exactly where I wanted them. In the end we had them resurface our pool, replace/add handrails and add a new seat in the pool interior. They also repaired cracks around the pool and patio area. The entire project was completed without suspending time during the job from the first day to the last. Jose is a professional in every way!

My wife and I recently purchased a new build here in Otay Ranch in Chula Vista CA. Our backyard was a big project as our backyard space is over 14,000 sqft which was all dirt. I spoke to several landscape design company's and they were all either way too expensive or they didn't have the experience or credentials we were looking for. That is until we found Exterior Designs Landscape. Jose Castro the president of the company came to my home and took the time to review what our vision was for the backyard. We walked around the backyard going over detail after detail while he listened and took notes. We spoke about the best types of grass, privacy hedges, irrigation systems, the look and feel we wanted etc. This man knows what he is doing and it shows. Jose has over 40 years of experience with landscape design and he was able to walk me step by step through the process and phases of the job. Jose and his men are professional and HARD WORKING. They worked through all weather conditions to make sure the job was staying on target time frame. They were on time every day like clockwork until the job was done. Jose was on site and frequently communicating to his team as everyone worked as a unit. They were all extremely mindful of the current health situation as they all wore masks everyday without me telling them to. All in all these guys are PROS. They have turned my backyard into the dream oasis that my wife and I were looking for. We still cant believe how beautiful it all turned out. This is a A+ company and Jose Castro is an A+ man. I want to thank Jose Castro and his team for the excellent and professional repair of our concrete mailbox post with light which also included a block wall. We engaged Exterior Designs (Jose Castro) for major backyard remodels at two different homes in 2010 and 2013. Collectively, the projects involved complete yard demo, extensive hardscape work, installation of retainer walls, built- in BBQs, outdoor fireplaces, patio and covers – along with associated electrical, irrigation, lighting and drainage work. In our experience… Jose was professional and fair. He keeps his word and, if you have any concerns or issues, will work with you to resolve them. I never had difficulty getting ahold of him or experienced unreasonable delays in hearing back on messages. He was personally involved in our project. He was almost always on our job site in the morning to kick off the work, and would call nearly every night to check in. His team was great to work with…very respectful, hardworking, friendly, etc. They showed up when expected, they worked, they always cleaned up and they left. Big landscaping projects are moving targets, so you will find things you want to change. Jose is creative, and has a good eye for things – he’ll offer ideas but he lets you make the decisions. He is also flexible – just work closely with him to scope any changes or additions clearly so he can provide an accurate estimate of the cost. We strongly recommend you consider Exterior Designs for your project. We selected Jose for our first job in 2010 out of three bidders and, when we needed another yard done a few years later, we just went directly with Jose. We were very pleased with the outcome in both cases.

I purchased a new house in Rancho Santa Fe that came with no landscaping or fences. After completing an architect plan and approval from the HOA and RSF Fire Dept. I started to find a contractor to do the actual landscape construction. I contacted about 6 landscape construction companies and 3 responded. One of the contractors submitted a very sketchy bid that didn't detail the materials or other specifications on the architect plan very well and the other bid was also very poorly prepared lacking the construction details. Both of those contractors took several months to prepare their bids and contained numerous errors or omissions. Jose responded with a detailed bid in less than 24 hours. I wrote to him once asking him to add some extra words to the bid so his bid would match the architect specs more precisely and he once again responded back with the corrected bid in less than 24 hours. I wanted to make the right choice in selecting my contractor, so based on his detailed bid along with his response time, I selected Exterior Designs Landscape. I contacted Jose and asked him when he could start and he said in 2 days. I know how contractors work so I thought okay what's the catch? Well, he showed up in 2 days with his full crew and hit the ground running! His crew did a very good job and made steady progress and worked on Saturdays when there were weather delays. I am retired and I wanted the job done to my satisfaction so I was able to stay home on the contractor work days to watch the job and also met with Jose at least once every work day. We walked the job site daily, and I discussed with him my concerns. His answer was always we can do it and he always made good on his promise. This was our daily ritual for more than the 6 months it took to do a very elaborate full landscape job that included demolition, stone walls, walkways, 5 paver patios, lighting, irrigation, grading drainage, trees and plants, fences, gates, 3 water features, firepit, 2 porcelain tile patios, stone columns and natural boulders. His crew kept the jobsite neat and clean and removed debris from collecting. They stored their job materials and tools at the end of each day. Jose and his crew took precautions to not damage anything and did a very professional job. He thanked me many times over the course of the job for the opportunity to do this job and I believe he is very proud of the results and has posted over 100 photos of my project on this website. Everyone who has seen my landscape are equally impressed with the outcome and have given much praise and compliments. All of my neighbors say they want their landscape to look just as good as mine. I am also very satisfied with the results and much of that is because I spent numerous hours making sure all of the work followed the plans or make improvements to the plan as the job progressed. But all of that would not have happened without the cooperation and workmanship from Jose and his crew. Jose always said to me during our discussions that he wanted to make me happy. I hired this company summer of 2018 to resurface and color coat an existing block wall in my back yard and add a walk way in my front yard which we designed. I am happy with the front yard, however the finish is on the wall is deteriorating and Mr. Castro has not returned to fix the back wall as he has said he would. He uses his "charm" to placate, saying numerous times "I will take care of that". I have not seen nor heard from him.

Jose was recommended to us from a co worker and we couldn't have been happier. He was attentive, tailored the initial landscaping plan to our needs and kept us informed of timing and progress on a daily basis. We have had a lot of work done on our house and working with Jose was a nice change of pace where customer service is actually important to him. The work quality was great! I learned about Exterior Design Landscape from Houzz.com. We have a small/medium sized side yard we wanted landscaped and a BBQ island rebuild. Mr. Castro provided us with a beautiful design and a very reasonable estimate. He helped us adjust the design and materials to fit within our budget and started working on our project a few weeks later on the date agreed upon. Mr. Castro's team was always on time. They arrived every morning at 7:45 am and left in the afternoon leaving our front yard clean and organized. Mr. Castro was very easy to communicate with and had an amazing attitude at work. They completed our project sooner than what they anticipated and we are extremely happy with the final result. Exterior Design Landscape is a wonderful company to work with. Jose and his crew did a fabulous job on our Palomar Mountain Cabin. He meticulously rebuilt outdoor deck and retaining wall. Although the property is very remote, this didn't impede his team whatsoever. Additionally, he had wonderful suggestions that I did not previously consider. I give him my strongest endorsement.

Our patio had a lot of deferred maintenance with cracked tile pavers and an old built-in bbq that no longer worked. It was a small job and our budget was limited yet Mr. Castro and his team treated our project with just as much importance and meticulous care as he does on his big beautiful projects. We have a lot more work and repairs to our landscaping and outdoor spaces that need to be done and Mr. Castro was wonderful, he told us he will be there to do the work when we are ready and that no job is too small. His team were able to blend the new work with the old weathered existing areas and the whole are looks wonderful! We will not use anyone else in the future but Exterior Designs.

Jose Castro is the owner of Exterior Designs. Let me start by saying Jose answers his phone, shows-up on time, does a great job communicating and is very clear about pre-approving all work. That in itself beats 90% of the competition!! Jose has good design ideas and is helpful with both hardscape and landscape. Whether it is trees, shrubs, sprinklers, gas lines, lawns, walls, gates, pergolas, fire places, walkways, complicated patios, tile design, making new a perfect match to existing so on and so forth Exterior Designs does great work. The crew is respectful and closely supervised by Jose. The job site is tidy during construction. Timelines are provided and adhered to. Jose is patient with "owner changes" and gives input to make sure things are practical. Our yard was transformed from temporary dirt and bark to a masterpiece.

Exterior Designs Landscape did an incredible job. They installed a floating ipe deck with an adjacent planter. They were professional, always on task, and the craftsmanship was excellent. This company is capable of any landscape design or scope. We are content with our purchase!

Mr Castro and his team were hired to replace a fence in our backyard. They did an excellent job. Very easy to contact and communicate with my Castro. In 2008 we hired Jose Castro and Exterior Designs, Inc. to completely transform our backyard which involved demolishing all of the existing hardscape, transplanting existing palm trees, and completely rebuilding the new backyard including flagstone and marble flooring, BBQ island, fireplace, patio covers, and seated benches as well as new irrigation, drainage and lighting. Before actually hiring Jose, he met with us on several occasions and brought hundreds of pictures from his past projects. These pictures were very helpful in that they gave us some new ideas many of which we then subsequently incorporated into the design of our backyard. Jose’s team was very courteous, did high quality work and cleaned up at the end of the each day. Jose proactively called one or both of us almost daily to ask if we had any questions, comments or suggestions. Both of us work full-time and Jose was very flexible to meet when it was convenient for us (often on Saturdays or Sundays). We were very pleased with how the backyard turned out and hired Exterior Designs again in 2012 to redo the landscaping in our front and courtyard which involved demolishing all of the existing hardscape, transplanting existing palm trees, and putting in custom flagstone flooring and marble seated benches as well as new irrigation, drainage and lighting. Jose’s policy is to always make the customer happy. We believe that an individual’s ‘true colors’ come through when things don’t go exactly as planned. Every project has things which come up unexpectedly. In these situations, Jose was always professional, of high integrity and stood by his ‘the customer is right’ policy.
