Parnell Pride

The clients came to me with a dated apartment that needed to be transformed into a modern, open space. The main aspiration was to create a kitchen that was visually interesting, using full availability of the space, but still in keeping with the client’s own personality and flair. Their kitchen needed to be “glamorous” and still have a comfortable feel for family living. The most important aspect was, being an apartment, to make the space appear bigger. I used mirror on both the splashback and bar back as a creative solution to create the illusion of extra space. The mirror reflects the contemporary space, which is also achieved by the use of clean linear lines and a simple hi gloss surface. The clients’ need for full use of available space was achieved by keeping benchtop and cabinetry depths at a minimum. The cabinetry was built to maximum height; this created as much storage space as possible. The on-bench bifold doors hide the microwave and create extra workspace when needed. The kitchen was positioned with the island facing the outdoor balcony to view the apartment’s distinctive skyline and waterfront profile. It also allows the much needed natural light coming to rebound of the mirror, creating a sense of extra light and space. By using these aspects it has turned the space into a fully functional and practical kitchen. A good working relationship and constant communication with the client is what was needed to enable this project to be successful.
