Merricks House

This new build family residence is situated in an elevated position off Thompsons Lane in Merricks, on the Mornington Peninsula. Set on a 52-acre site, the challenge here was to maximise coastal views to the south of the site, whilst offering protection from strong winds and changeable seasonal weather. An important part of the design concept was to create an expansive year-round family home that sits comfortably within its setting, and capitalises on the striking views of both coast and surrounding vineyards. Set across three levels, this home offers almost 1000m2 of living space. To take advantage of the elevated views, living spaces were proposed to the upper levels, with a raised infinity pool and entertaining deck, allowing the clients a sunlit space to soak in the views of this spectacular site. Rammed earth was selected as the dominant materiality to create a warm, tactile and robust shell that protects against the elements. To reference the trees on the site, spotted gum cladding panels were proposed to break up the linear form, further softening the building into the landscape. A projecting zinc roof ties in with the clients equestrian centre on site and the neighbouring agricultural buildings nearby.
