The owners of this plot wanted to make the most of the ever-changing and breath-taking views of the Northumberland landscape surrounding Rothbury. In a high elevation the site provided their architect daughter in partnership with 'Model Projects' with a unique opportunity to design something specifically for them, that would give them an outstanding home, overlooking Simonside and beyond.
The three acre site presented initial challenges to us, primarily due to it’s location at the top of a steep rise, with narrow access routes through residential areas. As the house was designed to be cut into the rock slope and the garden sculpted around the building with a land retaining wall, there was a great deal of preparation and excavation to be carried out to achieve this.
Following the installation of a reinforced raft foundation slab we spent 5 weeks erecting ground, first floor and roof structures consisting of purlins and Structural Insulated Panels. Precoated aluminium was then rolled out for the roof which was selected for it’s natural qualities, aesthetic appearance in keeping with the design and suited the size and expanse of the structure. We installed Velfac high performance windows and doors, including the large floor to ceiling panels that make up impressive features on both ground and first floors.
Supporting the SIPs panels and windows, promoting sustainability and eco- efficiency we introduced Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR), Airsource heating and solar panels.
Internally the features are remarkable from the glass central staircase, wood herringbone flooring throughout, curved walls to soften and interest and a library in claret to a bespoke beautiful kitchen, high ceilings and spacious sweeping corridors.
The clients moved in just before Christmas 2017, on time and within budget and they are both, and their daughter, delighted with their home.
