The exposed laterite palette recurs across the exterior and interior of the home. The inclined portion of the roof was created by pouring mud onto a faux stage on stilts. The look is a contemporary interpretation of the local pitched roof. It complements the earthy, multi-level terrain, which in itself was a curious challenge to navigate.
The main door, camouflaged against a wood-panelled entryway, leads visitors into an entrance vestibule.

The vestibule is defined by a sweeping red laterite wall and leather-finish Kota stone flooring. An indigo chaise longue provides a colourful offset against the peripheral rustic palette, while wide steps on the side connect the foyer to the rest of the home.
Inside, the house follows a linear flow, and is composed of multiple levels as a result of the uneven terrain. Locally sourced laterite is dominant throughout the home, both as a design feature and as a base construction material for the walls.

To the right of the entrance lie the common areas; namely the living and dining room, and the kitchen. Greys, brick and timber define the living room, in the way of the wood-panelled and laterite walls, and the cement oxide ceiling and Kota floor. Along both lengths of the room, huge French doors dominate the walls, allowing for plenty of cross-ventilation and two-way vistas.
The living area receives light by sunrise and sundown. Huge bay windows open onto the east deck, while the west deck is separated by a part-wall, part-glass partition. The sunset accents nod to the hues of the evening sun.

The dining area serves as an extension of the living room, but is distinct in its form and palette. The absence of laterite, and a primal palette of grey and white, affords a more subdued ambience. The ceiling and floor mirror each other, the former wearing a cement oxide finish, the latter, a cover of Kota stone.

A passageway connects the living and dining areas with the private sections of the home. The Kota stone flooring makes a familiar reappearance here, as do the exposed laterite walls. An elongated alcove punctuates the passage midway, playing host to the entrances of the two bedrooms.
Large bay windows flank the passageway, integrating it with the surrounding plantations. The antique storage unit between the bedroom doors adds to the home’s old-world charm.

White and grey present the master bedroom in a hushed avatar. A timber-finish ledge underpins the window, double-hatting as a pleasing sun perch. The bedroom also has a walk-in closet and an attached bathroom.

The master bathroom is cloaked in grey, with the walls and floor channelling a monolithic presence. The built-in bathtub is overarched by a sleek skylight that welcomes natural light from above.
The sunlit south wall is enlivened by large planters, while the painting above the WC lends a pop of colour.

The second bedroom mirrors the master in its layout. The timber headboard wall provides a warm offset to the neutral shell.
The rear of the house hosts a sunset deck.
