Entertaining: Table Decorating Ideas for Magical Winter Dining
Add a lovely personal touch to your winter dinner parties with these gorgeous handcrafted table settings
The early months of the New Year, when venturing too far afield isn’t so appealing, are the perfect time to host cosy dinner parties. But just because it’s only you and a few friends is no excuse not to make each occasion special. Put a little time into creating unique and beautiful table settings and your guests will remember and appreciate these small details.
These table settings ideas are so easy to do and mostly make use of bits and pieces we all have in the house at this time of year anyway. So grab some twine and sprigs of herbs and get creating.

1 Place a fork over a knife so they make a cross. Now take a length of twine and start to wrap it around the knife and fork at the point where they intersect. Then simply tie the twine at the front and snip the lengths if too long.
2 Reach for your sprig of rosemary (if possible, go for large rosemary as it looks more impressive on the plate) and place it in the centre of your stacked plates.
3 Then grab your cutlery bundle and place it directly on top of the rosemary. This little detail will always get your guests talking and they’ll enjoy untying their cutlery while the subtle scent of rosemary fills the air.
A sparkling centrepiece
For a special touch, why not go a bit further and add extra embellishment to the table? I adore introducing a touch of the outdoors into my décor, and a dinner party is the perfect opportunity to try this look out.
1 Gather some long, thin branches and, once dry, lay along the centre of your dining table. Then dot some paper spheres along the branches for a pretty look.

Cinnamon and thyme place settings
What you’ll need
What you’ll need
- Cinnamon sticks
- A roll of twine
- Sprigs of thyme
- Dining plates
2 Take both sides of the twine and tie a small bow on top of the sticks.
3 Choose your sprig of thyme and pop it under the twine. It can be placed on the front or the back, depending on which aesthetic you prefer.
4 Then grab your dining plates – I always reach for plain white plates as they are so chic and versatile regardless of the season. Place a smaller side plate in the centre of the larger one for a elegant look.
5 Place a delicious-smelling bundle in the centre of each plate for a simple but oh-so-sweet table setting.
