GranitePro: It has longevity. Quartz may be the relatively new kid on the block, but granite has had staying power. It is time-tested and has universal appeal. Sure, certain colors may look dated in a decade, but you generally can’t go wrong with granite as a long-term investment. It almost always helps sell homes.
How Will You Use Your Kitchen? When planning a kitchen remodel, you want to be very clear on how you want to use your new kitchen. Here is one example: I want to have people over more often. I want to feel relaxed when I entertain. In order to feel relaxed, I need to make sure that no one is in my way while I cook. I also want my kitchen to stay neat during the cooking process and be laid out so that cleaning up will be efficient.Clear goals can help homeowners make decisions and, as the budget nears its limit, ultimately choose the options that will best support their goals. What matters most to you in a kitchen?
Hanging rails. Another form of open storage is a rail that can be used to either hang utensils and tools directly (via a curved handle or a hook) or hang containers and holders to keep your utensils within easy reach but off the counter.
Now for the Fun Part: StyleOne piece or two? There are two main types of range hoods: all-in-one and insert plus shell. Most of the models on the market are the all-in-one kind, composed of the exterior portion of the hood that you see from the kitchen and the blower fan inside. These are great options, particularly when you want a more subtle or timeless range hood look — perhaps a classic stainless steel one, for instance.Range hood: Classico Poco series with an IQ Blower, Best; find bar and counter stools
The Flexibility of Hood InsertsHere’s an example of the two-part option working well — only in this case, using just one of the two parts. The clients for this Atlanta kitchen originally wanted a metal range hood, but their budget didn’t allow for a metal hood. So designer Lauren Davenport Imber of Davenport Designs had a wood range hood custom-made and faux-painted to look like metal. The two vertical lines on the hood are stainless steel straps that have been riveted to the frame. Inside the hood is the insert, or blower, that gives this range hood its sucking power. Another option is building a hood surround that mirrors the style of the cabinetry, as in this kitchen.
Before we get started on the details, I have one overall bit of advice: select finishes that you love, regardless of what is trending. Recently, I bumped into an old client and asked if she still loved her chartreuse kitchen seven years later. She does, and chartreuse is still her favorite color. Remember that trends come and go, and select the finishes that make you happy. Now on to design tips for your kitchen remodel.Range Hood Strategies1. Use door restrictors. Due to the projection of the hood, the doors on any directly adjacent wall cabinets will hit the hood when opened. To avoid dinging your beautiful cabinet doors, you have two options. You can add a restrictor to the door closest to the hood, keeping the door from opening past 90 degrees. Or you can use a door that opens away from the hood, as shown here.
8. All-White KitchensAll-white-kitchen lovers, don’t fret, the look is still plenty popular. Using all white is a great way to let the beautiful finishes on the hardware, faucets and lighting stand out. And by using glass-front cabinets, these homeowners can bring in any accent colors they want via china and glassware. What’s your favorite kitchen style? Do any of these current trends speak to you? 5. Wood CabinetryFor a while there, it seemed like every cabinet in the country was getting a white paint job. But homeowners are rediscovering the beauty of wood.
