CLEAN BATHROOM-My best advice is to use pre-mixed grout everywhere. Pre-mixed grout has the sealer mixed in & never needs resealing. It’s just easier to clean. It takes a little longer to install because the installer needs to grout smaller sections & wipe down immediately, & then go on to the next section. But time is saved because the installer does not need to return next day to seal. And you will never need to scrub grout with a toothbrush! All my kitchen, bath & flooring tile looks wonderful (& mold-free) even after several years.
CLEAN BATHROOM-Choose Wall-Hung Features “Use a wall-hung vanity unit and [toilet] to keep the floor as free as possible,” Rezende says. “It makes it so much easier to clean around the entire area, especially the floor.” “All [fixtures] should be easy to clean,” Byrne says. “Look at the toilet seat: Can you reach all the crevices with a cloth? Streamlined [fixtures] will be easiest to clean.”
CLEAN BATH -Install a Waste Trap “Little and often” is a good mantra when it comes to cleaning, and a small preventative measure such as a waste trap can be a big help in cutting down on housework. “Always make sure you have a [drain] with a hair trap in both your sink and shower,” Rezende says. “You can then frequently remove it and quickly clean it to avoid hair clogging up waste pipes and prevent it from becoming an issue.”
If your bathroom is already very long and tunnel-shaped, rather than emphasize the length even more, consider working against the length and visually stretching the width instead. This room uses the direction of the long, elegant floor tiles, as well as a band of accent tile in the shower, to visually stretch the width of the room for a more balanced look and a less tunnel-like atmosphere.
Designer Susana Simonpietri of Chango & Co. and James Crisp and Sandee Mahoney of Crisp Architects collaborated on this bathroom to give the homeowners a balance of traditional farmhouse and modern design styles. The large-format Belgian bluestone flooring, dark grout, ceiling lights and black steel shower surround infuse the room with an updated feel, while the Shaker-style cabinetry, ceiling beams, subway tile and vanity lend a sense of age. The contrast between dark and light and between wood and steel amps up the drama. Tip: Smaller spaces don’t require small-scale items. The large-format floor tile seen here keeps a variety of scales at play and anchors the room beautifully.
Although fixtures mounted on either side of the mirror are considered best for casting even light across the face, mounting them above the mirror remains a popular choice. Sometimes it’s simply impractical to do otherwise, given the size or position of the vanity mirror. Fixtures above the mirror should be 75 to 80 inches above the floor. Also look for fixtures that hold higher-wattage bulbs so available light has the best chance to fall evenly over the sinks.
