Tobi Fairley Interior Design 9. Hand-painted dots. Bright, candy-colored polka dots are hand painted onto the walls of this colorful bathroom. While not easy, hand painting a simple motif like this is a bit less intimidating than tackling a trickier geometric pattern (as seen in No. 6), and is less costly than wallpapering.

When to think of framed wallpaper: Framing wallpaper, either in actual frames, or using molding, is a great way to show off a bold, artistic paper without covering an entire wall. Smaller, sample-size or leftover pieces can be framed and hung like art. A larger application, like the one seen here, is a great way to fill a big blank wall over the sofa or above a bed. ’60s-Inspired in the Netherlands Who lives here: Anja and Jeroen Hesp and their children, Reyer (age 12), Binck (10) and Catelijne (7) Location: Santpoort, the Netherlands Anja’s love of 1960s movies inspired the style of the couple’s master bedroom, from the vintage nightstands to the bold, graphic wallpaper. The peacock-hued paper (from Graham & Brown) is so vibrant, it works as a stand-in headboard with the couple’s low-slung platform bed. Wallpaper: Soprano, Graham & Brown

After collecting wallpaper samples given to her by a magazine stylist friend, Vetter came up with the notion to create her own one-of-a-kind wall treatment using a patchwork of different papers. The result is a quirky, charmingly textured look that works well in Vetter’s cozy bedroom.

Instead of going with bold paint or a traditional wall covering in the foyer of their home, Devlin and Baldassari had a vintage photograph of Florida’s Hypoluxo Island blown up and turned into wallpaper. “We thought it would make a nice conversation piece and add an interesting element to the space,” says Devlin. Now guests entering their home are greeted with this massive photo mural — definitely a conversation starter!
