Sowohl Nadel- als auch Laubhölzer können thermisch behandelt werden, sie weisen aber am Ende sehr unterschiedliche Eigenschaften auf. Nadelhölzer werden durch die thermische Behandlung weich, Laubhölzer haben dieses Problem in geringem Maß. Jedoch wird das Holz insgesamt weniger biege- und damit weniger tragfest und eignet sich nicht mehr als Konstruktionsholz, dafür aber umso besser als Terrassenbelag: Hitzebehandeltes Buchenholz rückt von Dauerhaftigkeitsklasse 5 zu Klasse 1 auf und ist damit ebenso haltbar wie Teak.
