The 8-foot long fireplace in the great room was a bit of a challenge for Hollis. Both she and the client wanted it to have a clean cut, with no glass. In the end, they had the piece custom made with sensors that turn the flame off if someone gets too close. The installation was tricky as well — since the fireplace was made in a single piece, it had to be craned in through the building's roof.

This kitchen is working triple duty. It has the ideal mix of layered lighting. Above, we have general or ambient lights; under cabinets we have task lighting and over the island we see accent lighting. If they are all on dimmers, this lighting can serve any event or mood.

Comfortable seating in our kitchen. A sun-swept dining area is perfect for reading your latest magazines over coffee, especially when there is cushy seating to enjoy them from. Mornings and windows seem to go hand in hand.

Plush, window-side seating is exactly how I envision the start of a perfect morning. This custom booth was an excellent choice for the round table and makes this space cozy and inviting.

Here's another cushy dining area, this time near a wall of glass. I imagine this area would be perfect for catching up on blogs or watching the kids play outside while you enjoy your morning break.

IKEA base cabinets above the wall cabinets make great storage space for items that aren't necessarily for everyday use — such as special holiday dishes. The warm wood tones help warm up the smooth space and look custom — but without the additional cost. "The goal wasn't to add top-of-the-line pieces we didn't need, but to use resources as creatively as possible,"

Aimzter made sure to include 3 trash pull-outs in the island.

Notice the receesed wall cabints over storage cabinets till ceiling. Despite contradicting advice, aimzter decided not to put a sink in her kitchen island. "I wanted a giant workspace where we could spread out cooking, crafts, or homework projects," she says. "It was important to me to have a solid surface for flexible use."

Treat the TV as an appliance. When the TV is treated as one appliance among many on a wall, it almost becomes invisible. I love the idea of an appliance wall anyway. It just makes sense as compared to having them spread out all over the kitchen. None of these particular appliances are main tasking ones, so it's fine for them to be outside the main work triangle.

Add it to the message center. Electronics are just a fact of modern life, so consider having your TV, phone charger and music in one spot.

In a kitchen, moving the outlets to a lower, horizontal position helps keep them out of the design-critical parts of the backsplash. And because you won't have long cords snaking up to a higher plug, they'll be mostly out of sight when in use.

A deep drawer is a great way to store dishes for those who want to keep above-counter shelving neat — or to avoid shelving all together. Of course, the problem with attempting to pile dishes neatly into a drawer is that they can slosh around when you open and close the drawer, inviting scratches, chips and even breakage. If you have a deep kitchen drawer that's become a rattling mishmash of dishes, picking up a pegboard and dowels at your local hardware store could provide you with the perfect solution. Take a look:

By installing a pegboard cut to the size of your drawer and using wooden dowels with a dowel pin screwed into the bottom, you can create your own customizable dish organizer. The dowels keep the dishes in place and can be moved around as needed. This great idea for storing dishes was brought to our attention in the kitchen remodel of Houzz user Karen Heffernan. Inspired by some of the previous photos, she implemented the dowel-and-pegboard system above in several deep drawers for simple, space-efficient dish storage.

Special hardware accessories are great for full utilization of a space. Spinning, rotating, moving, sliding, oh my! This seemingly complicated storage system provides one simple function: use nearly every square inch of this space for storage. Racks on the doors are perfect for spice containers. The other shelves hold larger items. By using this type of system, you can create a deep pantry and still get to items in the very back without having to crawl into your cupboards. If you are just trying to redo an existing cupboard or pantry, talk with a local cabinet maker about incorporating some of the many storage options.

Take the idea of "pantry" to a new level. Less pantry, more wow! There is something so romantic about a small room completely outfitted with all you'd need to bake a cake or can the year's yield of cucumbers. Do you have an unused closet or small room by your kitchen that might serve this kind of purpose? It could change the way you view your kitchen completely.

Start with the basics: silverware. I like to put silverware in an upper small drawer close to the dishwasher, if you don't have a dishwasher then close to the sink, It's all about ease of clean up and putting items away when it comes to silverware...if there's an island, then I sometimes put the silverware drawer in the island, but still a pivot away from the dishwasher or main sink. The most frustrating thing about poorly designed kitchens (or anything for that matter) is that you spend time searching for things in vain). Here, the obvious spot is the small drawer to right of the sink.

Q

Photo

Even though there's a drawer to the left of this dishwasher, I wouldn't use it for silverware because it would be hard to access when the dishwasher is open. I'd go for a drawer to the right of the sink, even though it's a bit further away.

Q

Photo

Where to put everyday dishes? If you're lucky enough to have more than one cabinet for dishes and glassware, think about something close to the dishwasher — but not in the way of its open door. If you're standing at the sink, and the dishwasher is to the right, then put the everyday dishes and glasses to the left of the sink/dishwasher. (Here, the dishwasher is hidden behind a cabinet panel door, but you get the idea).

Q

Photo

where to put everyday dishes? If you're lacking wall cabinets but find yourself with lots of tall storage space, use a pantry cabinet for dishes instead.

Q

Photo

Utensils, knives, and everyday spices. Whether it's a wall rail system for utensils and spices, a silverware organizer, a pot rack, or a spice drawer insert, check out all the amazing organizers out there on the market that are designed to be adjustable and fit existing kitchen cabinets of various sizes. Items like small appliances, large pots, mixing bowls and salad bowls are well situated to open shelves under islands or a baker's rack if you can carve out some space for it.

Q

Photo

Standard-size spices will fit in drawer organizers, and there are many on the market that are adjustable for different size drawers.

Q

Photo

Oils, vinegars, and taller spices. Imagine yourself cooking in your kitchen. Oils, vinegars, and items in taller spice jars, salt, condiments, sauces, etc. are nice to have in one cabinet to the left or right of the stove. You don't necessary want to walk to the pantry to get these particular items every time you need them. If you have cabinets between your sink and stove as shown here, tall spices, oils and vinegars are ideally suited to that furthest wall cabinet on the right.

Q

Photo

Pots and pans. Pots and pans should be put in a location that makes sense: near the stove (or cooktop). I prefer roll-out shelves as opposed to drawers for pots and pans, and if you can have a dedicated lid drawer, even better. The reason I like roll-outs is that they're shallower: I can see what I need, as opposed to drawers where I often have to pull out the pots on top to get to the one on the bottom. If you have a cooktop, underneath is ideal. To the side is fine when you have a range, and if you don't have room for a large cabinet to the side of your stove (27"-30" wide minimum), the island right near the stove is fine, too. If you don't have an island put them in a cabinet perpendicular to you, or a pivot away in a peninsula.

Q

Photo

Casserole dishes and small appliances. These items are ideally stored in cabinets that have roll-outs for easier access. Tupperware is another topic. if you have a blind corner or lazy susan cabinet, use that for heavier items like small appliances — light-weight items tend to get stuck and fall all over the place. Tupperware is best in drawers. (Have you ever opened up a wall cabinet and had it topple on your head? Exactly).

Q

Photo

Dry goods and the food pantry. To answer my sister's question: Yes, if you have a pantry, put all your food there! Don't spread it out in wall cabinets just because you have empty cabinets! Walking around opening doors looking for things you can't find is one of the most annoying and frustrating things, and often keeps people from enjoying cooking. Less-used spices and sauces can go into the pantry, but put the items you use more often close to the stove. If you're a baker, and you have the space, carve out a spot just for baking items like sugar, flour, etc. I have a client who truly has a sprinkle drawer!
