Thinking Like a Pro

No matter what kind or size of dwelling we live in, we can think like a pro in how we set it up. Pros know the key principles behind a home that runs well (and looks just plain awesome) while simplifying how it's run.

Yes, we can ourselves create a home that looks influenced by a pro. And runs like a home with a full staff, yet sans staff. Here are four key hints:

CREAT A STREAMLINED BATHROOM, outfitted with understated, traditional hardware. Go for white surfaces, and tiling, and add color in details (or a claw-foot club or vibrant paint).

Even if you don't go all white, GO WITH WHITE BEDDING as a base for your linens. You can not only keep whites bright, but give your sleep space a streamlined hotel vibe. Add color in throws, pillows, or a comforter--or keep everything pristine and monochromatic.

PROFESSIONALIZE YOUR KITCHEN. Even the teensiest kitchen can run with industrial strength, with the right materials. Use appliances with multiple (rather than single) purposes, such as a kitchen aid, and keep bulk items and spices in glass jars for streamlined access. Stock your pantry like a supermarket: logical ordering and labels out.

ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSET. The small hassles of getting in and out of your closet can be eliminated by organizing and, if you have the space, creating a small kind of boudoir. Reorganize by thinking new: fold instead of hang jeans, hang tall boots to keep their form.
