Asian Contemporary-Style Bathrooms Rooted in moody stone and woods, clean lines and minimal adornment, this zen-like style made its way from spas into homes. Prestige Custom Building & Construction leaned on the look for this New York bathroom, which won a 2012 Best of Houzz design award.

The guest bathroom is a play of light and dark. Balis plucked colors from the patterned floor — Iron Ore on the wainscoting and trim and a range of whites and creams on the zellige-like shower tiles. The handmade tiles and white oak vanity warm up the space.

“I designed the house around this tumbled travertine mosaic floor tile,” Balis says. “It was so earthy, and a sample of it rode around in the car with me for about six months as I chose everything else. It set the tone for the entire house.” The mirrors hang from hooks with square backplates, adding character to the space. “I didn’t want to use basic mirrors, I wanted to add something interesting and artistic,” Balis says. Floating the white oak vanity added a modern touch, while using polished nickel finishes brought in timeless elegance

In the powder room, Balis repurposed a chest of drawers with an antique look as a vanity, adding character. Dark boards painted Sherwin-Williams’ Iron Ore add depth to the space, while brass sconces and mirror frame bring in some brightness

I like the black hex/black grout floor. Love the look of the bathroom. Here's how the designer saved o the bathtub tile. To keep to the budget, she knew she needed to use inexpensive tile. She picked three different sizes of standard white tile at a big-box store. “We knew we needed to make the inexpensive tile look fancy so we got creative. We played around with them on the floor of the store and came up with this pattern,” she says. She alternated the three different tiles in horizontal stripes, using a running bond pattern and dark grout. The square tiles nod to midcentury modern design but the composition is fresh and unique. Carter lined up the large niches to correspond with the pattern. “I think everyone needs niches that can handle Costco-size bottles of shampoo,” she says.

Think about what you need to reach for on a daily basis and what needs an electrical outlet when arranging bathroom storage. Talk to your designer about materials that will make a bathroom easier to clean. Consider epoxy grout for bathroom floors. Place a shower niche low if you want it to double as a shaving shelf. (e.g. a foot off the ground with lower shelf for placing foot). think big. e.g 5 ft tall by 14" wide

The designer replaced the doors that lead from the bathroom to the bedrooms with pocket doors so that she didn’t have to allocate space for door swings. This teen’s vanity is a little smaller than her sister’s, but opting for a vessel sink allowed for two large drawers beneath the countertop. They also used Epoxy grout which is expensive but very resistant to staining.

2019: The wavy lines of Emser’s Myth tile series combine whimsy with geometry, a growing trend, says Emser’s Tekstra. “We’re still seeing geometric patterns. And texture, color and any kind of multidimensionality is where we’re seeing trends emerging,” she says.
