Desk Project
The workshop of Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David (1743–1807) created innovative furniture designs combined with intriguing mechanical devices to revolutionize traditional French and English furniture types. Based in Neuwied am Rhein, Germany, the workshop employed novel marketing and production techniques to serve an international clientele.
I am commissioning a desk to be built in an American style with some of these characteristics; for example, replacing the gilt facade in the middle of the interior with a Massachusetts Georgian house facade rendered in marquetry. In front might be a "granite" doorstep which would lower the panel when pressed.
However, the desk is pretty straight from the Doric order of architecture and to remain true to the style, making those details as inlays rather than ormolu.
I've attached some ideas for the swags, the Escher style parquetry for the writing surface, and a chair crest that mixes neoclassicism with an agricultural theme, so it's swags, festoons, and vegetables.
