Another black and white rug creates continuity between the rooms; this time it is rendered in a zebra print. Electric orange dazzles as part of this palette, while boldly colored prints are anchored by black and white framing. Any of the bold hues of the artwork would work well on the dining chair slipcovers.

howcasing artwork was a priority in this foyer, and both Marsh and Reich loved the idea of creating a gallery-like display on the existing charcoal gray wall. The designers designed this vignette organically, simply combining their two design styles — putting in one piece, then another — with no set plan in mind. This casual plan resulted in a space that has a little something to appeal to any client's taste.

Add to ideabook by Benjamin Dhong Interiors by Benjamin Dhong Interiors Abstract art has a great ability to set a mood. For that reason, it is a perfect backdrop for contemplative spaces like bedrooms and sitting rooms.

This small abstract piece looks great in a traditional gold frame. The contrasting details blend beautifully.

Display cherished belongings (and get rid of the rest). Begin with a small step. Do you have a box of old photos that give you warm fuzzies every time you see them? Choose your favorites and have them framed.

Contemporary. But move to the kitchen in the same house, and the light fixture confuses a modern reading. (I see this as built in, or at least designed specifically for the space, not as a furnishing.) This fixture certainly departs from the simple finishes of the rest of the house, pointing to this space being contemporary.

Design tip: To hang groups of pictures together, trace the frames onto craft paper first and cut out the pieces. Position the pieces and lightly tape them onto the wall. You can move them around until you are happy with the layout, without putting a ton of holes in the wall.

Design tip: If you are hanging a piece of art above a piece of furniture, keep the art's width at 50 to 90 percent of the width of the furniture. The ideal width is 75 percent. Less than 50 percent is too small, and more than 90 percent will look out of proportion.

Get personal. Whether you live in a custom-built home, an older house or a rental, you can make it feel like you. Honoring your tastes — in color, art, heirlooms and accessories — will help you stay true to yourself and make your home beautiful, too.

Black and white photography. If you have an opportunity for art placement that is focal to a space, consider black and white photography. Oversized pieces or a grouping add an edge to even the most traditional spaces.

This designer also opted for black trim on the windows. See how it gives the room a refreshing crispness and definition, making the windows pop and giving cohesiveness to the room.
