Good questions! Yes, there are guidelines for pendant light placement. We begin with the bottom of the light at 36" above the countertop or table top. Then adjust as needed depending on the ceiling height, shape of the chandelier, etc. These lantern lights look to be about 40" above the island countertop. (36" high counter + 40" to bottom of lantern = 76" aff (above finished floor). And Yes again, you do want to be able to see underneath the light and not have it block your view.
