large this large that toasty neutrals

When you’ve got a large piece of art to hang, it’s important to hang it above an equally large piece of furniture so that the 2 relate to each other. In other words, don’t let a large painting hang by itself on a wall. Anchor it by placing it 4 – 10” above a table and leave a minimum of 4” on both sides of the picture, framing it with lamp[s]. Tall vases also would help put it into context. Tall, narrow pictures, 6’ or more can hang alone, although it’s useful to have several to set up a rhythm on the wall.

The size of your space will be a factor in determining just how dramatic a bold stone looks once it’s installed. In this vast kitchen, the scale of the dining island extension suits the space perfectly

Hanl chose a wider than standard Shaker door for the fir cabinetry. "This gave me the heavy dimension and scale I was looking for to balance the sheer size of the room," she says. Double the thickness of counters continues the balance with the wood cabinetry.

So a narrow shower looks more interesting, use tiles with a tiny scale. Doing so will add texture and pattern that recedes rather than advances (as actual patterned tiles would), a neat space-stretching trick. These also contrast beautifully with the smooth sheen of the storage unit.

Putting oversize paintings and photographs in simple frames, or using no frame at all, is a fresh way to handle artwork. Think of the way an art gallery displays works: one or two to a wall, with lots of white space between. Big, contemporary artwork is a great way to make a traditional space feel more current.

Houzz; "This particular design really plays with proportion. On paper, I wouldn't think this oversized sculpture would work with this slender table, but it does work. Don't be afraid to experiment."

Keep an eye on scale and lines. Here, taller seating wouldn't work — but they might in a less traditional room lacking chair rails. Yellows and golds are the neutrals here, and accents are kept to a bare minimum. Surprise elements are twofold: The ethereal, mustardy abstract and the mirrored coffee table are both lovely anchors. The round lines of club chair pair well with the classic, silk velvet roll-arm sectional — and nicely contrast with the angular moldings. Sharp marble, obsidian obelisks and jutting black sconces tie it all together while contrasting color-wise.

high ceiling, might be that sofa size was 'set aside' for large art

light isn't large but art is.

Tending towards black, the deep espresso brown in this room is livened up by a rich shade of blue. The oversize art repeats the bright blue and emphasizes the contemporary feel of the room in both palette and subject matter.
