This was my first idea for our island, half soapstone, half butcherblock. Still want to add butcherblock somewhere... perhaps on the last remaining wall where the cabinets end? Or, just get a lovely large cuttingboard to display on top of the island.

The shelves... open shelves to display the pretty things, cabinets below for the rest. But, in earthquake country, how to make it work? Using the shiny metal tells both brightens by reflecting light and adds interest and information.
