Note that Hardie has specific requirements for attaching panels to framing that may affect your layout. If you depart from nailing the battens to the framing, you'll need to check the technical bulletin on fastening to SIPS, structural insulated panels. Whether you are using sips or not, Hardie tells me the principles are the same. Good luck!
Blue Truck Studio The siding is Western Red Cedar with a clear seal/oil finish. It's a 1x6 product off the shelf from the lumber yard... actually a smooth v-groove T&G profile, but we used the rough sawn back as the exterior face. To keep it looking the way it does in the picture, yes, it's a bit of maintenance. Otherwise, it'll go grey/brown over time (particularly where there's sun and water exposure)... which is also a nice look if you're into that kind of thing.

RO Robert Leeper Landscapes They can be ordered from a Dallas company called Jackson Pottery. They are made in the area, and are durable, long-lasting concrete (good luck to the thief who thinks they can take these + pro tip: you will need a crew and dolly to move the bigger ones) and they come in lots of modern forms. My favorite finish is the "limestone" which is white, I also love the raw concrete. If you can't make it to Dallas, call and they will let you know who in your area carries their products. Concrete block
Stacked concrete blocks can create a linear, mid-century look; however, it doesn't work with standard, builder-grade cinder block. In this case, each block contains an aggregate of pebbles which achieve a slightly organic aesthetic. Once stacked, the blocks' color and mortar between takes it to the next level. These are also easy to work with; many aggregate blocks come in ultra lightweight forms and are readily available in light and dark gray finishes.
