Dimensions of furnishings, esp. height, are key in mitigating the room’s large scale, e.g., K chose etagere for its height, which makes the oversize arched opening next to it feel smaller; echoed etagere’s height by hanging the drawing on the other side of the opening at about the same height; chairs with high backs and tall side tables topped with tall table lamps stand up to the two-story-high ceilings and other extra-tall architectural details. Big effect on scale is the large, low-hanging chandelier. “The chandelier brings the ceiling down and creates a focal point at a more human height,” Kaplan says.

pendants in custom wood ceiling screen is innovative; usually installed on a visible track, designers hid track in a space above the ceiling, Renee Gaddis says. “We used monopoint mounts to go through the ceiling and attach to the track, which allowed us to achieve the clean and contemporary look.” DAINTY pendants like these make a statement when paired with more masculine decor. In this case the dark wood in the custom screen and cabinetry offsets them.
