brass chandelier is original to the house and a great juxtaposition to the sleek white midcentury Saarinen table underneath. Worrel chose four black Thonet bistro chairs as a bridge between the vintage chandelier and modern table. “The Thonet bistro chair was designed in the Victorian period, but it’s really one of the earliest pieces of modern design. It’s a classic look that always feels fresh and relevant,” she says.
Be purposeful with color. A considered color palette can create a sense of direction; have a lot or a little color, but have a plan - or risk having a mix that doesn't harmonize. In the space shown here, pink, purple and blue are repeated in artwork, pillows, throw and even a book - and the small potted plant on the coffee table, creating an energetic yet collected color palette.
Balance textures -- too many chipped, aged and rough textures in one room can make your space feel more like a flea market than like the fresh, inspired room you were going for. / when there is only one piece in a certain style, it can stick out more than if it had a little company. / two pieces together that are very different usually works better than pairing pieces only sort of different. In this kitchen a classic kilim rug and antique cabinet are set off by a slick swoop of ultramodern chairs.
One Small Room - OSR Interiors & Building Design: "This home has wood floors in the front part of the house; this ensuite has a tiled floor; newer extension at rear has a steps down from wood onto a concrete floor throughout dining, kitchen, lounge, main bathroom, laundry / with some wood panel inserts in the lounge and dining area tying to the front of the house.... do what feels and looks right. We really only have 2 floorings throughout - it's only the ensuite that is tiled / as it's off the main bedroom which couldn't be concreted."
Eclecticism wears its lack of pedigree proudly and draws its energy from contrast. The trick is to find enough common ground to make a space gel. The dining area shown here weaves together a narrow palette and subtle shine, from the table to the frames to the chandelier. No two chairs match, but all of them have strong silhouettes and roughly the same proportions.
