Seaming ideas for fabricator for our Calacatta Laza quartz
Other details include a true cabinet-depth fridge (24 inches) by Liebherr, durable quartz that resembles concrete for the countertops, 2-by-4-inch Carrara marble tile on the backsplash, and pullouts around the range for oils, spices and cooking utensils. Unable to salvage the original fir floors due to extensive damage, the designer found sustainable wood from local company Viridian Reclaimed Wood. It’s salvaged from transpacific shipping crates that once carried steel railroad track. The well-worn character of the flooring fits right in with the cottage.
The cabinetry is a modified Shaker style with a step — see the extra indent on the inner edge of the stiles and rails — painted in a soft gray (Oh Deer by Portola Paints & Glazes). The countertops on both the island and the perimeter are Calacatta marble. The walnut floors are the same as before the renovation, but Word had them sanded, stripped and treated with oil to show off their natural beauty.

After: Sloan reconfigured the entry area by moving the exit door over to the left, where a window had been. She then used the former entryway to create a half bath. “There was limited space and we absolutely had to be creative,” Sloan says. “It let in more light and extended the kitchen closer to the backyard.” The upgraded door includes insulated glass with a Douglas fir exterior that matches the new wood floor in the kitchen. A rectangular island with a stain-resistant Statuario-marble-look quartz top gives the family work space and seating for casual meals. The same durable quartz was used for the perimeter counters to help give the kitchen a clean and unified look. “I like it because it looks like marble, and it goes with my French range,” Becca says. Mee helped the couple choose the transitional-style cabinets with Shaker-style doors and vintage round brass knobs that Becca found at a local antiques store. The cabinets as well as the full-extension, soft-close drawers with brass cup pulls were painted a blue-green-gray (Oil Cloth by Benjamin Moore) that offers contrast to the white walls. 6. Create a Kneehole and a Footrest A freestanding island can lend itself nicely to a breakfast bar. The designers of this island opened up one side to accommodate a row of stools and a built-in footrest for comfort. A Kitchen for Entertaining and a Budding Baker More beams and plaster continue in the kitchen. Cooney used only a few key upper cabinets to give the kitchen an antique look. The perimeter countertops and the backsplash are Danby marble, from the neighboring state of Vermont. The island, its prep sink and the apron-front sink are Pietra Cardosa, a gray-blue stone that resembles soapstone but is harder and more durable. Another material Cooney used consistently throughout the house to get an aged look is iron, seen on the lanterns. She used dark paint on the window trim to pick up on the lanterns’ dark finish. With all the straight lines, the room needed some soft touches. The upholstered counter stools, the edge of the range backsplash and the coarse linen Roman shades with fabric tape accents soften the space. Behind the range is a baker’s pantry and a workstation for the youngest daughter, an avid baker. Love the range and backsplash. Once we had the bright turmeric yellow cabinets, we went with an off-white backsplash tile and used the texture of [Fireclay Tile’s] Picket tile to add depth through the pattern, not with color.
