“I suggested the vertically oriented grid composition for the backsplash to give it a different dimension from the usual,” Bagley Catlin says. “I also suggested we go with a medium grout rather than a dark one to really set the tile off in contrast.”
Wanting to bring the fun of the backsplash over to the bar seating, the homeowners chose to add a green epoxy to the walnut countertop.
“We really maxed out the functionality of this bar,” Bagley Catlin says. There’s a beverage fridge, a wine fridge, a panel-front ice maker and a bar sink. For storage, there’s a mix of glass-front and solid cabinet storage, as well as open shelves for display.

Other special features. “The decision to use hickory hardwood connects to other flooring throughout the clients’ home,” Midlik says. “The bookshelves are custom by Architectural Justice artisans and are crafted from a stained red oak. The dark stain pulls from the graining in the hickory floor, and the oak provides a subtle but noticeable texture in dim lighting, which establishes that aged and cozy heirloom feel within the room. “The American Tin Ceilings tiles are a statement in the room, with brushed silver and bronze tones connecting to the hardware throughout. The grid was centered within the room and trimmed out for a timeless built-in installation. Interior shutters were custom-stained in our shop to match the bookshelves. The client provided the wallpaper, which adds a hint of color and reflectiveness with its crushed glass on a damask patterning. The various moldings ground the room with traditional elements of style, and the cast-bronze hardware reinforces the theme that this library will stand the test of time.”
