for some reason I always like the vertical look better. I found some examples of those, but really can't find any horizontal in your size around a window these were a few Now compare this one^ to this one: yes it will make the ceiling appear taller The Renzo tile is pretty. it's a 2.5X13" https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/msi-renzo-25-x-13-glossy-ceramic-picket-wall-tile-mvp11522.html compare that to the 4x12, which I think is too big let me show you the Renzo and how it's cut against the countertop w/the vertical layout and this is doing a horizontal layout against the countertop. The tile has to be cut exactly down the middle so that it's symmetrical. (look at the first photo w/the Sky Blue tile. see how they cut those at the bottom? that was a good tile job) and one not done correctly. Corners are horrible too. Always do a dry layout and know where the cuts are going to be. you never want slivers or tiny triangles. BTW, here's that Renzo brand in the Dove color their 5x5 is also beautifu But this Jade? wow. stunning here's a 3x12 in a vertical. I think I like the thinner size

Finally coming back to share pics of the finished kitchen/mudroom! If I could go back to the very beginning I would have chosen a different backsplash tile (than either the herringbone OR the picket we ended up with, hah!) but I do like how clean and bright it makes the space, and it's a better white with our cabinets and countertops. I moved the boxes of herringbone tile to our basement and will either hold onto it for a future bathroom project or sell it (for half what we paid I'm sure, sigh). For now, though, we're enjoying our new kitchen and mudroom space! Thanks for all of the tips and advice offered here. @Beth the mudroom door is Black Fox and I love it! I ended up using the rest to paint the stairs down to our finished basement. Not sure I have a pic, but I'll look and share it. Great color! (This paint job clearly isn't finished, but the Black Fox color is such an improvement! The stairs used to lead into the kitchen and are now a closet for my husband and me. The boys each get a cubby in the mudroom.)

Amber, after looking over your rendition pics, I came up w/some other alternatives. Lots of pictures below trying to explain a few diff things that I caught. hope it isn't too confusing. first, I like this tile if you're taking out that left cab, then for sure, put up two floating shelves. (I know you're doing it on the other side, but why are you removing it from the window side? I'd run the tile all the way up, and all the way up around the vent hood. In fact, want to see my rendition? (iimagine it w/your green tile) I'd do the floating wood shelves, woven wood blind w/pendant, and instead of the SS chimney style hood, I'd prob have one made to match the cabinetry and trim it out in the same wood as the shelving. I gave you a glass door, but that's up to you. here, this is where I got most of it. if you used the 5x5 tile it would look like this Another visual shoing the open shelves next to window, and the cabinet over by the peninsula. (and very nice pendants and window treatment that matches the stools) With mine, I had a vent hood made to fit around my insert. I trimmed it out in the same walnut that's around my window and my shelves. Do you like the SS chimeny style hood better? Just something to consider. the inserts are around $700 for a 36" range top. or, paint the chimney hood to match your cabinets. this looks so much better than the SS Exactly where do you want to mix and match your tile? how exactly were you going to use both? I see no obvious delineation where using two tiles will work. Do you have another space where you could meld the diff tiles? Or did you want to use one on one side and the one on the other? (that would be a no) In my own space I have a marble tile as a backsplash, andoff to the left, a little coffee bar area that I did a completely diff tile with my walnut shelving. Do you have any other spot you could use it? maybe over in the dining area? or a bar area? Back to your peninsula. you said you removed the cabs and are doing shelving? something like this? It's a little diff because this shot has the window on this side. you would only be removing the one end cabinet? what if you shortened all of those uppers on that side and did a single long shelf to the end of the peninsula? Pendants too Both of these are peninsulas by the window could you move your peninsula to the left side? is that an option? Reaching your open shelves w/the peninsula in the way could be difficult. You could opt for this instead, and do the shelves on the window side. on the window side, you could do partial upper cabs( they sit higher) and one shelf beneath those. (and do the shelves on the other side) Peninsula side- You could put the uppers back in, but make them glass front like shown here: Or like this one. I like the enclosed shelving like they did here Or like this one. a wood veneer on the interior just takes the look up a notch. Where do you plan on ending the tile on this side? you going to take it all the way out to the edge? (make sure you get bullnosed tile for these end pieces. Or you could do a Schluter Jolly edge) this one is a bullnosed edge tile that stopped at the upper cabinet Personally I prefer this option. take the tile all the way to the countertop edge lord have mercy, don't EVER finish off the edge w/vertical tile like shown here.

gloria, sorry for all the pics! wanted to make sure you saw all the options. I added a few more up there, did you get to see all of them? Look at the last pic on this comment!) show your husband! here is a few more of the vertical and the vertical offset Since you have that large wall, I think it would look amazing if you did this (or the other vertical) and took it to the ceiling. or the regular stack. after seeing some pics, is there any one you prefer? reconsidering going all the way up? if you decide to stop at the hood, you'll have a large portion of an untiled wall. consider installing sconces if you don't want to do the tile heck, I'd prob do sconces regardless. you have the room for it. even w/the tile all the way up, the sconces just add so much show him all these pics! these are beautiful doing the whole wall

reconsider taking it all the way up. even w/the shelves it will look fantastic. here is one where they stopped. I don't think it looks as good as the other few more all the way up! it's very popular they even did the hood w/the tile So most of these are the regular offset (or standard subway layout) The one in that shower from another comment is called a vertical stack bond. Like this one this picture is also a vertical stack but in an offset. I like this one: Regular stacked (Stacked Bond) This one is diff. Stacked running bond) have you ever considered a basketweave or crosshatch? or, maybe a 90 degree (Diagonal) herringbone?

To me, the answer on shape depends on the style of the island. If it has seating similar to the first photo, or legs to make it look more like a freestanding piece of furniture, then I like your plan. If it is a monolithic block like the third photo, it looks too bulky.

@saracurr I am currently leaning toward the Ra even though I am doing all cooler tones in my kitchen (all white cabinets, gray, blue, and white on my feature tile and chrome fixtures). The reason is that I prefer the veining in the Ra. The veining has some hints of taupe, but I personally feel that’s part of what makes it look more authentic. I am attaching a picture of my cabinet and backsplash next to both slabs so you can see how cooler tones look next to each. This will be my feature backsplash and the cooler tones work well with both Giza and Ra.

@saracurr my cabinet color is roughly the equivalent of Sherwood Williams pure white. Here’s a picture of my cabinet next to a sample piece of Ra and the SW color chart in case this helps give you a sense of the shade. Just FYI: I was specifically warned that the sample pieces of the countertops are not made in the same place as the slabs and they will not be an exact match and should not be used as a substitute for the slab color. It gives you a sense though. To appreciate the brightness of the white, you can see how the Giza and Ra compare to the Pental quartz Misterio and Lattice which I was previously interested in until I saw how yellow they look in comparison.

Sorry - I really have no complaints so far about the look and the ability to get stains out, however there is a very very small chip on one of the counter edges. I don’t know how it happened as it wasn’t me (possibly cleaning ladies or my husband) but that is making me a little concerned. The installer tried to fix but because they are so white you can see the difference. I’ll post a pic- you can’t really tell from far away but I notice it every time I am getting coffee.
