JRD: I'm going to just throw this out there, but I don't like the color of our house and I REALLY like when houses have a bold color added to a portion of the exterior. And there is too much going on out here, but love the color accent. SY: Are you going to paint your house a different color that we should be thinking about? (I love the color of your house.) You could paint your front door and get a pow. And we will think about color in the back for sure! JRD: Now that I see the design, the brown works well. Our front door is yellow. :) SY: PERFECT
JRD: This is the rug in our front room (to left of foyer) SY: lovely! But you are saying you'd like to leave that in the front room and get the yellow striped rug for the sun porch, right? JRD: yes, I think my thought was I'd prefer a rug with a little color because we already have a black and white one -- and that having the black, white, and yellow one seems to fit in with this rug.
SY: I'm not doing a lot of furniture specs but I look around to get ideas for rendering and always figure I may as well drop the cool pieces I'm looking at here for you! JRD: like this and wonder if we could find something that looks as cool, but a little more comfy. SY: agree! There are really so many options for lounges and chaises. JRD: Perfect.
ooh! with yellow! This is super on sale right now (it's trade only - your price in your size only $500 or so if we get it before it's gone) - wool and cotton. JRD: yes - and John agrees - let's buy it. I love everything about it. SY: lol, I need to make sure it works in the room first! I'm working on that, and will have Keri call to see if we need to scoop it up, or if we can wait til after I present next Friday and feel pretty assured that it will still be available.
SY: I'd love the flooring in the sun room to be the same wood from the family room, to connect the spaces. In that case, I would like to translate that great floor tile we both like in the previous image to a rug like this one. Thoughts? JRD: Sounds good, but I like the yellow, black, and white one better. Yellow is currently my favorite accent color for the house (it started with the front door and now is in almost every room). SY: great, got it
SY: I love this for you guys. Am thinking the black spindles tie to your dark siding, while the hand rail and deck color complement each other and create contrast. I also like seeing the rails like this - a bit more defined than cable. JRD - I really like the idea of avoiding the cable. I know cable is strong, but I worry about kids crashing through it. SY: great, I love when we're on the same page.
omg floor. thoughts??? JRD—OMG love. Love. Love. Everything here. Especially the floor. It made me wonder about the possibility of expanding the sunroom footprint to mirror this, so it extended out toward the kitchen and the stairs seen here would come from the kitchen. Interesting to contemplate because I love the idea of sitting on a sofa like that and staring at the woods. SY: the furniture layout I can get you! And overall aesthetic effect! I'm so excited you love this floor/overall look. I will punt back to Leslie regarding footprint expansion exploration! JRD- thanks!
this is fun - wood stove in sun room? I'd probably give you a sofa on one side and a swivel chair + hammock swing on the other. A 48" round table is looking possible for you - that is ample room for 4, could squeeze 5. Is that enough? I could try for a 60" w rectangular table to fit 6 or 8 but that might be tight. JRD-although it’s a cool idea, I’m too paranoid about fires in living spaces, so no go on the stove. And I don’t think we ever talked about the feasibility of this, but we’re OK if the sunroom extends beyond where our current deck sits. That said, I think a 48 inch round table would work and then maybe a large table on the deck. Also, I am spending the day on Harrison lake in Columbus and just loving all the screened porches here. So excited. SY: Gotcha! No stove. That gives you room for the chaise sofa like the next image. :)
how many people would you want to seat? at a lounge grouping inside, and also at the sunroom table and outdoor table? see next image - I'm getting 6 at an outdoor table right now, 4 at an indoor table, plus 4-5 lounge seats inside. Good? JRD: Yes, I think that sounds good for inside...if there is any way to also have additional seating on deck beyond the table, that would be ideal, but not a necessity by any means. SY: YES we also have lots of outdoor lounge seating. Sorry I didn't mention that.
SY: Just using this image to ask you about the family room furniture and set up. I see that you use it for tv watching and treadmill - and cozying up on the coziest situation EVER. My family would be so jealous of that sectional! In thinking about the connection to the sun room, I just want to understand your thoughts and priorities about the family room. Talk to me about that space and its use and various pieces. JRD: great question. The sectional is cozy, but too big and poor quality. So, we are not attached to it at all. We do have a TV on the opposite wall. We’re open to any recs and we’ll be happy to rearrange the family room. We, unfortunately, don’t have another location for treadmill and found that we use it when it’s in the middle of everything, even tho this isn’t my preferred locale. But the treadmill could be relocated to our bedroom now that I think about it. And, we would like the new, en suite bedroom window to open.
JRD: I'm afraid I'm asking for everything, but if there is an area where I could do yoga and look out onto the woods, this would be INCREDIBLE. Maybe if it isn't in the sunroom, it's possible in the En Suite Bedroom with the big new window. Ahhh, I feel more chill just thinking of this.... SY: OMgoodness I would be so jealous.
JRD: like tile floors, globe lighting and comfortable chairs in addition to as much glass as possible. SY: It'd be nice to heat the floors, perhaps, for cozier winter use. Thoughts on that? JRD: great idea, but I worry about the expense and maintenance. Maybe rugs are a happy medium to a tile floor? SY: yep! I love a rug. So many reasons to have one.
JRD: doubt it's possible, but windows/door would be cool for dining room entry onto deck
JRD: Here is one with two-levels that are connected by stairs which is an option -- I like the silver wire/metal element for side of deck/banisters - we have some metal/industrial elements in our kitchen.
JRD: love the triangle window and huge sliding door. Guessing this is way out of budget though
JRD: The overall vibe is too industrial for me, but love how it's all windows. I think we'd want some shade, but as little as possible.
JRD: I am unsure about the wicker, but like the idea of a loungy vibe and hammock chairs/swings. We'd like this space to be casual, comfortable, cool, modern. A place to gather with friends/family, to eat a meal, play games, read, and watch nature. SY: ok - question about use. Ideally, you'd like lounge furniture in this space, as well as a table to eat/play games? JRD: yes but we’d prioritize lounging over eating. So if table isn’t working that’s ok. If table is, we’d use it.
JRD: roof is cool; I like angles and believe they would blend with the angles of our house/windows.
JRD: I doubt roof line would work, but this looks really cool....the angular, non-symmetrical window shapes are similar to some of the windows in our home already.
JRD: Love the color scheme and simplicity. I'd like a table and comfy chairs in the sunroom. I'm a huge fan of BOLD, BRIGHT splashes of fun, happy colors.
JRD: Love the openness of this, great beams, nice lines, like the simple fan, but I think I'd prefer something other than track lighting.
JRD: I really like how this ceiling is mostly comprised of skylights and the walls are also very open to the outside. I'd like to feel like we are outside as much as possible. SY: nice!
JD loves gradual descent, statement elements JRD: Woo Hoo! I can comment too! Janet will use "JRD" to differentiate from John, but chances are I'll be the one commenting most often :) We both LOVE this look with the cool planters with ornamental grass (one of my favorites), modern, simple elements, and large stairs.SY: yay! And look at all the images you've found! Brilliant! This will set us in just the right direction.
SY: what do you think of this kind of window? JD: I can respond. SY: Great I'm so glad. JRD: I like ceiling-to-floor windows, but think these windows are too segmented. I'd like as much solid glass as possible. I do think we'll want a little shade in the sunroom and a fan because it will be our outside sanctuary when it's too hot to be on the uncovered deck.
SY: Specifying this for your sconce at this time. $46 each and perfectly fine. There are loads very similar to this, and we haven't checked lumens or reviews on this one. We can get more interesting but the price goes up to $200-$250 per sconce, and you need 3. ok? JD: sounds good
