I have a condo with a big oak tree in front of the only window (sliding door) and the light makes wall paint look green. According to Chevreul: whites appear green orange appears grayish-leaf-green yellows appears yellowish-green green appears deeper green blue appears bluish-green black appear dark greenish-gray red hue family will look yellowish-brown purple-blue and purple hue families will look bluish-gray So if you want to avoid the green I'd start experimenting with colors from the red, purple-blue and purple hue families.

This may or may not give you some paint color ideas. I like the fact that she talks about undertones and how different lighting can affect the color with some of the colors. And Pale Oak is included. https://www.lindabrownell.com/best-warm-gray-paint-colors/

I plotted the colors on the wheel for you. Maybe that will help you visualize each color's hue bias a little better. As far as Smokey Taupe being pink - maybe. It's hue family is yellow. How it's mixed, the quality of light and what it's compared to will determine if Smokey Taupe appears to be pink or not. If I want a color a bit deeper or color concentrated than Accessible Beige, without going more grey, green or pink, what would you suggest? I like BM Smokey Taupe for it's depth of color... Glidden/ICI Dulux/Akzo Nobel. Might be able to get samples from the Home Depot: Buffy 30YY 60/104 or Sudan Sand 30YY 53/125

Maybe go for a darker color for the dining room, something in this palate. Even if the table is dark, lighter fabric chairs would brighten up the room and make it look mature and elegant.

What color of artwork would make the paint look more gray or tan, and less purple, if it looks like that when painted? You don't know that it will look purplish in that space - yet. Agreeable Gray belongs to the yellow hue family. Kind of over near the yellow-red hue family. You can see where it plots out on this color wheel. In a balanced quality of light, Agreeable Gray looks like a midtone, neutral, warm, near neutral gray. However, in certain qualities of light it can shift and look purplish. Near neutrals from Agreeable Gray's hue family neighborhood are notorious for shifting purple in unbalanced qualities of light. Which is why you will find some opinions about Agreeable Gray that insist it "has no undertones" it's just a warm neutral gray. While others will talk about an edge of purpleness that is noticeable in their space. Just because the masstone looks pinkish or purpleish doesn't mean it will render that way in the space when applied and dried. So it might be a little early to start looking for strategies to counter purpleness that might not even materialize. If it does shift and look purple, then you know you need to try near neutral grays from a different hue family neighborhood.

HELP! Is it more accurate to paint a poster board or wall sample?

Q

SwatchRight is a circle shaped paint peel and stick sample decal. The circle shape creates a different visual experience that makes choosing paint colors easier, your eye focuses differently on a circle than it does a square; physiologically a circle is more visually ergonomic than a square or a rectangle.

It's always better to paint on the wall, If you don't want to damage it there is a product called Prime Cloth sold at hard ware stores and Home depot that is an adhesive piece of paper you can paint and attach to the wall with out harming the surface since the ahesive never cures. The existing wall color will always effect what you paint on top unless you prime or use a product like prime cloth.

Is it more accurate to paint a poster board or wall sample? SwatchRight is a circle shaped paint peel and stick sample decal. The circle shape creates a different visual experience that makes choosing paint colors easier, your eye focuses differently on a circle than it does a square; physiologically a circle is more visually ergonomic than a square or a rectangle. You never view color in isolation. All you can do is manage the context. The existing wall color really isn't the issue. Everybody thinks it is, but it's not. Whether you're sampling on a white primed background or some other color, they both will influence your perception of the color sample. The only way to manage it is to engineer the test color into focus... and that's what SwatchRight does. Don't ever paint directly on the wall. Even with well-feathered edges, the sample spots can telegraph thru you final finish.

When you test colors, paint a 20 X 30 piece of cardboard and hang it on the wall for a few days. If you like it, proceed. If not, start over.

Painting trim is quite a job, you have to sand and then paint. You could try this in one room just to see if you like the results. I agree with the previous post, it looks like the mouldings are pretty standard. The easiest moulding to replace would probably be the base. You might see a big improvement if you replace base and door trim. If you have any idea about doing this work yourself, I recommend Gary Katz' instructional DVDs. Casing and base are not difficult.

Orange? Really?!??! That said, there are colder and more pure whites to explore if that is your preference. Try BM Super White or BM White. And yes, bulbs make a huge difference. https://www.earthled.com/blogs/light-2-0-the-earthled-blog-led-lighting-news-tips-reviews/37176324-how-to-choose-the-best-led-light-bulb-for-any-room-in-your-home

Extra White doesn't do that. If it makes you feel any better about EW, I'd put it on every cabinet, door and linear foot of trim if it were up to me because it just makes life easier. And I think it's pretty, crisp, clean white that isn't too stark.

PPG's Delicate White is one of my favorite whites because it's not "too" anything. It's like the perfect pitch of everything you want a white to be. I'd recommend getting the real color from PPG, but people have had pretty good luck getting it matched at SW and BenM.

what it looks like to compare a bunch of colors of white based on hue family and chroma (last infographic)

Q

With chroma, the lower the chroma number, the more grayness.

Q

Instead, know that when it comes to color - even colors of white - there are varying degrees of grayness. It's called chroma. It helps if you think of chroma as a dial and you can turn it up to make a color of white cleaner and brighter or turn it down to make it dirtier and grayer.
