These plants respond very well to a cool, dry rest over-winter. I used to pry them away from my mother (she got them from her mother) every Sep and return them on Mother's Day. After I took them, I let them go completely dry in a cool spot in the basement. Some time in Apr, I would lift them from the pot, bare-root, replant them in fresh, fast-draining, 'damp only' soil. It takes 2-3 weeks for them to wake up and start pushing new growth. The cool/dry rest really revitalizes the plants. Al

First, the entity you bought them from should have known better than to ship them if chill injury was a potential issue, so there is a good chance you could be refunded part or all of your purchase price, though you also bear a part of the responsibility for ordering at this time of year. Most sellers would rather have happy customers and would gladly reimburse you so you might buy from them again and not have a reason to let everyone within earshot know about your situation. There isn't much you can do but wait to see how the plant handles the setback. "Give them light, warmth and make sure you don't over water" is good advice - particularly the "don't over-water" part, as the plant will be particularly susceptible to excess water in the root zone at this point. I'd just allow the plant to do its thing. I wouldn't remove leaves or add any "tonics" or fertilizer. If leaves become net users of energy rather than net producers, chemical messengers will tell the plant to shed those leaves. If the leaves aren't so badly damaged that the plant cannot "harvest" mobile/useable biocompounds from the leaves, leave the leaves on the tree until they dry up. If you remove any leaves, you should use a pair of scissors to cut through the petiole (leaf stem) somewhere between where the attachment points to the leaf and the trunk or branch. The stub will fall off on its own. Maintaining trees in a container for the long term requires something of a plan and some effort along that long term path. I think the following two links will provide a good basic understanding of how to keep your plant in fine fettle for as long as you are tending to its needs. About the cultural wants of Ficus in containers. The cultural wants of F lyrata are essentially the same as benjamina. Maintain trees in pots for the long haul. A basic overview might also be of interest, since you're an admitted beginner. It can help you avoid the most common 'issues' all container gardeners face at some point in their journey toward a green thumb. Al

I see I can get to you by email. If I send you a short note, you'll have my addy so you can send me a picture (of your tree) lol. Can you do that? What I think we need to do is get you on track in the watering fertilizing areas for the moment. First, I think we/you should get your soil flushed thoroughly, as I described in the link to Sketchybird. I'll copy paste it so you don't need to go looking for it: Here's what I would do. Move the tree to where you can flush the pot thoroughly - in the tub or shower is great. Saturate the soil with room temperature water and wait 10 minutes. Then, flush the soil with a volume of water at least equal to the volume of the container it's in 5-10 times - the more the better. This removes accumulating solubles (salt build-up) from the soil. After it stops draining, remove the tree from the pot & set it on newspaper over night. The paper will 'pull' excess water from the soil. Return it to the same pot next day. Wait to water until a wood dowel stuck deep into the soil comes out clean & dry. When it needs it's first watering after the flush, fertilize with a 1/2 recommended strength of MG 24-8-16 or 12-4-8, or Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 (my favorite). I'll have you add a wick to the pot for now. The wick will help excess water drain & allow you to water properly. You'll need to arrange for the pot to be ABOVE a collection saucer when you water, with the wick dangling below the bot 2-3", but NOT touching the effluent that collects in the saucer. When you water - use enough water so at least 10-15% of the total volume of water you apply exits the drain or drips off the wick. This keeps solubles from accumulating in the soil. You can learn more about why how water behaves in container soils here . If you absorb the information in this thread, it will stay with you and help you with your container gardening from now on. Nita - I linked you to the overview in an attempt to help you understand 2 things. Growing well means that you have know where the "sweet spot" is. We can't provide some conditions that would be considered favorable and some that aren't, because it will always be the least favorable condition that limits growth and vitality. If everything is perfect but for 1 factor, that will be the troublemaker. Fortunately, most houseplants do very well with only minor variances in their cultural wants. Other than cacti, if you can keep 90% of your plants in a soil that can be kept moist w/o a significant amount of perched water (soggy layer at the bottom - more about that in the next link), at about 70*, at a favorable light level, and using an appropriate fertilizer, your job becomes remarkably easy. I'll try to answer your questions in order. 1) If you read the link below, you'll discover that it isn't so much what you "put in" your soil as it is the size and physical characteristics of what you use. Basically, you want to start with a very large fraction of coarse material - say 75-80%. It might be fine pine bark pieces or other inorganic particles. It doesn't matter, as long as it allows you to keep a favorable ratio water and air in the root zone. Too much water is primarily what you need to guard against if you want your plants to have the opportunity to grow as close as possible to their genetic potential. I have found that an extremely high % of problems folks come here seeking remediation for are able to be traced back to a poor soil as causal. Spoiled foliage, rotted roots and diseases, and insect infestations are most common, and soil choice is usually the underlying cause. The link explains how water behaves in soils and offers a couple of recipes to build on. Understanding the concept has changed the way a large number of people approach growing in containers. 2) If the root system is still viable, the plant should recover, even though it will likely shed the leaves as a drought response. Remember, it can't effectively take up water w/o adequate air in the soil. Ideally, soil should only be about as damp as a well wrung sponge. If it was my plant, I would take it out of the pot and inspect the root system for dead roots. If you find slimy roots or a sour-smelling soil, you might need to do an emergency repot. If the roots seem ok, you can unpot the plant and set it on a mat of newspapers, paper bags, clean rags ..... for an hour or two. This will wick the excess water from the soil, which in turn allows more air to make its way into the root zone. I'll wait for a report from you before we go on to the next step. 3) It might be appropriate to return the plant to the container it was formerly in. Having the plant a little root bound in a container small enough that it doesn't remain soggy for extended periods is much better than the inverse of that condition. 4) Cuttings from a struggling/stressed plant are very low % bets. Getting a cutting to strike is a race. The plant needs to grow roots and make a vascular connection to the top of the plant before fungal problems rot the plumbing. The more stored energy the cutting has the faster it makes roots and the less likely it is that rot organisms will spoil the outcome of the race. You'd do better to try to bring the plant back to good health, and then take your cuttings, but you can try if you like. You'll need a very airy rooting medium and a warm, bright spot. Kitty - I wouldn't use a fungicide on the soil if I were you. Your plant forms all sorts of relationships with other living organisms in your soil, some of which actually help the plant absorb water and nutrients. Any fungicide you select would probably be unselective, and likely to do more harm than good. The exception would be if you were having fungal issues with the foliage, in which case some sort of anti-fungal remedy might be more appropriate. Plus, what Tiffany said. Internodes are exceptionally long, which is a positive indication the plant wants more light. It also should be sited where temps are at least 70* if possible. Advancing root congestion causes shedding of inner and lower leaves, so as root congestion increases, there is less & less foliage proximal to the growing tips of branches. Your tree exhibits these symptoms, so it definitely needs a repot, a procedure much more involved than potting up, because a full repot included bare-rooting, removing problem roots and some of the larger unnecessary roots, making room for a larger volume of fine roots that do the lion's share of the work. With regular root pruning, you can develop root systems that have very few large roots that serve only as plumbing and to anchor the tree in the soil. Your soil is full of large roots that are well beyond the stage where they produce the hundreds/thousands of fine root hairs plants need for best health/growth, but that doesn't mean you should act now to correct the congestion. I don't think the plant needs to be treated for fungal issues. As your tree begins the shedding process, the plant removes everything that can be reused from the leaves in the process of being shed. The future of shed foliage includes an eventual total breakdown into elemental forms. Fungi play the larges part in that process unless the leaves are eaten by small animals or soil life. The role of fungi in breaking down the foliage very commonly starts while leaves in the process of being shed are still on the tree, so the pictures you show with leaves being acted upon by fungi don't mean the whole tree is under fungal attack. The leaves being shed no longer have the advantage of the plant's active defenses, while the leaves still viable do. One of my favorite biblical passages (Ecclesiastes 3:1) To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: ....... a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted ......... It's so when it comes to planting, growing things, and working on plants. We plant corn in the spring because that's the appropriate time. We harvest apples in autumn because they are at their best. Houseplants have a natural rhythm that, if we work WITH that rhythm instead of against it, can help us be better providers and more in sync with our plants. The upside of observing and allowing for these rhythms is a much greater opportunity for plants to realize a greater measure of their genetic potential. If you're interested, we can put together a forward looking plan that takes the big picture into account and provides a schedule you can repeat year to year and use to brighten all your plant's future. Hmmmm - I don't think I would have said that (not to add lime to the 5:1:1 mix - any chance you misunderstood or said you were using the gritty mix - or we got our soils mixed up? Even if I knew you were using FP, which has Ca & Mg, I still would have suggested you lime the 5:1:1 mix. How far along are your plants? Are they well-rooted yet? Al

Often someone else, in this case Robin/ Ohiofem, steps up to provide an answer that I agree with and doesn't require anything additional. Thanks for posting, which of course creates opportunity for the exchange of info and keeps this thread going. Glad you joined us, CK. The Orchiata is great stuff. Ideal size for the gritty is 2.5-4mm, but the 3-6mm will work. You might find it a bit coarse for the 5:1:1 mix. Do a search using words like "expanded clay", "calcined clay", "calcined DE", to see if there might be something easier, less expensive, and more appropriate. You can probably make the LECA work if you screen the fine dust out for the 5:1:1 and/or screen it to the appropriate size for the gritty mix. F lyrata requires/prefers the same cultural conditions as F benjamina. It likes lots of sun, but may not tolerate full sun indoors unless there is air movement to interrupt the boundary layer (of air surrounding leaves), which holds the heat in. It will tolerate the photo load, but maybe not the passive heat gain. They need a soil you can water correctly w/o worry it will remain soggy so long it causes root disease or impairs root function (due to lack of air). Soil choice is the reason for 90% of the issues that occur with this plant. Even diseases and insect infestations can often be traced to a weak metabolism resultant of poor root health. Root congestion causes limitations on growth rate and vitality, so regular root pruning is essential if you want to offer the plant the best chance to realize it's genetic potential and keep it happy for the long term. You should change the entire soil mass after bare-rooting and root pruning. Ideal fertilizer supplementation programs supply fertilizer in the ratio at which the plant uses the nutrients. No plant uses nutrients in a 1:1:1 ratio, so fertilizers like 20-20-20 or 4-4-4 are less than ideal. Plants use about 6X as much N as P, and about 3/5 as much K as N. When the calculations are done, fertilizers with 3:1:2 ratios are best. Reply to: F lyrata requires/prefers the same cultural conditions as F benjamina. It likes lots of sun, but may not tolerate full sun indoors unless there is air movement to interrupt the boundary layer (of air surrounding leaves), which holds the heat in. It will tolerate the photo load, but maybe not the passive heat gain. They need a soil you can water correctly w/o worry it will remain soggy so long it causes root disease or impairs root function (due to lack of air). Soil choice is the reason for 90% of the issues that occur with this plant. Even diseases and insect infestations can often be traced to a weak metabolism resultant of poor root health. Root congestion causes limitations on growth rate and vitality, so regular root pruning is essential if you want to offer the plant the best chance to realize it's genetic potential and keep it happy for the long term. You should change the entire soil mass after bare-rooting and root pruning. Ideal fertilizer supplementation programs supply fertilizer in the ratio at which the plant uses the nutrients. No plant uses nutrients in a 1:1:1 ratio, so fertilizers like 20-20-20 or 4-4-4 are less than ideal. Plants use about 6X as much N as P, and about 3/5 as much K as N. When the calculations are done, fertilizers with 3:1:2 ratios are best. Mr S - Ficus e. leaves can cup to decrease surface area in bright, direct sun, but if your artificial light source is other than metal halide or HPS, too much light is not the issue. In in situ situations, this plant spends its young years climbing over and through understory, struggling to reach full sun above the forest canopy. Only then, does it come into its own and thrive. NP - Any ideas? Could it be the water? Well, I have some thoughts. First, it "could" be watering or compaction issues (more in a sec), but I suspect a nutrient shortage or ammonium toxicity. There's not enough to go on, but what puzzles me is that atypical cupping of leaves most often indicates a nutrient shortage. It is however, unusual for a nutrient shortage to show up in both emerging and old leaves. A shortage of one of the mobile nutrients (macro-nutrients except Ca) will show up in older leaves, and a shortage of immobile nutrients (all the micro-nutrients but including Ca, a macro-nutrient) will be manifest in new growth. Will you look carefully again with an eye toward noticing if it really is all the leaves being affected? Too much water or compacted soil can definitely have an impact on nutrient uptake, and create a shortage, as can a rise in soil pH due to carbonate build-up from irrigation water. P77 - I've tended to hundreds of root-bound benjaminas and never seen (or read about) any leaf curl associated with the plant being pot-bound or dry. Ficus sheds interior and lower foliage and exhibits growth primarily at branch ends when roots are tight. Leaves turn yellow and abscise when the plant gets too dry. Branch extension also grinds to a near halt under root-bound conditions. Leaf curl generally means it's being exposed to extremely bright light (too bright) or nutritional deficiencies. Since your fertilizer contains zinc and manganese, the other two possibilities are molybdenum or Calcium. If it was molybdenum, foliage would be discolored - yellow or purplish. If you read the analysis of your fertilizer, you'll see that it contains no Ca, and probably contains very little or no Mg, so the only Ca it would be getting is what is in your tap water or what is residual in your soil (probably depleted). Since you never repotted, and I'm assuming you haven't potted up, I think that reinforces the likelihood of it being a Ca deficiency, which also fits the appearance of the leaves and the symptoms. What the plant needs is a full repot with root work, and a soil that allows you to water freely. Adopting a fertilizer (like Foliage-Pro 9-3-6) that supplies all the essential nutrients in a favorable ratio and a soil that allows you to water properly each time you water will go a LONG way toward your achieving the best opportunity for the plant to grow as close as possible to it's genetic potential. Atheen - a skewer definitely works better than fingers or 'moisture meters', unless the pot is very small; then, it's a toss-up. If your pot is more than about 6" deep, the top 3" of soil can read 'dry' to your finger while the bottom 3" might still be soggy/saturated, so you'd be inclined to water a plant that might already be drowning. Fortunately, if you're using the 5:1:1 mix, it isn't an issue as serious as it would be if you were using a heavy, water retentive medium like MG et al. And YES, you should care if the soil is soggy below the lowest level of root colonization. That soggy soil is probably the only reason WHY roots haven't colonized the entire soil mass. You're observing the effects of perched water, and fortunately, I can see by what you wrote that you're not one of those in denial of its existence or its impact on root health and ultimately the health of the organism as a whole. The lower the volume of perched water in the soil, the easier it is to maintain plants in good health. You might need to water twice as often or watering intervals might be reduced by 1/3-1/2, but the payoff comes in the form of better opportunity for top vitality levels. How much moisture there should be remaining in the soil when you water depends on the soil. With soils like the gritty mix, it hardly matters because they're soo difficult to over-water. The 5:1:1 mix can still be a little damp when you water again because it holds so little perched water (or it should hold very little - that's the point of making it). Heavy soils that hold a lot of perched water should leave you with a dry stick when tested before more water is added. Ideally, you want to water just before the plant starts to suffer stress from lack of water. That will be some point AFTER the soil seems dry to the touch or the stick reads dry. When soils start to feel dry to the touch there is still about 15% of the total amount of water that remains in the soil that's available for uptake. IOW, when it first appears dry, you still have some cushion. Input? Questions? Al

1) I don't think you need 2 mixes. I grow all my houseplants, succulents/cacti, and the woody material I'm growing on for bonsai in a very porous & gritty soil (the gritty mix), and it works very well - better than anything I've ever used, and I've used a LOT of different soils. I would crush the brick finer and use 2-4 mm pieces 5 parts 2-4 mm brick 1 part marble 1 part well-rinsed coco fiber If you really think you need a second soil, try 5 parts well-rinsed coco fiber 2 parts 2-4 mm brick 1 part marble If you have the means to crush the marble to half the size it is (2-4 mm), it would be an advantage. When you adopt this/these soil(s), we need to discuss what's available to you for fertilizer & work out a nutrition supplementation program, too. 2) No need to be concerned with sterility of your soil components, but it would be helpful to rinse off the dust so it doesn't migrate to the bottom of the pot & slow drainage. Be sure to discard the mineral fines (smaller than 2 mm) or use elsewhere. Al

Hi everyone! This is my first post of GardenWeb after lurking behind the screen and reading for the longest time. I would like to thank Al and the other GW members who have been so patient and kind to share their understanding of soil mechanics within containers. It helps me understand better how to care for my indoor plants in Singapore (most of us don't have the luxury of an outdoor space to grow them)! I am ready to take the plunge and mix my own 5:1:1/gritty mix for a long term substrate because the bagged soil that I have used have caused me to lost a few plants to rot. I have sourced around this little island country and found this product: Orchiata. Is this a suitable replacement for the bark component in both the 5:1:1 and gritty mix? Also, to sneak in another question. I don't think Turface is available in Singapore (non-commercially, I guess). Is crushed LECA a good substitute? Read some threads and seems like some people are using it. Hope to hear from you guys soon. Once again, thank you for this supportive and nurturing learning environment! C.K.
