Shutters are hugely versatile and not only allow the light to come flooding into your home, while maintaining privacy but they’re also very effective at blocking all the light out completely when needed. Think about how you use your windows as that can steer your choice when deciding on which style to choose.
3. You Can Use Them to Create a Focal Point Bring your room to life by making your shutters a standout feature in their own right, and creating an instant wow factor. Simply choose a design or colour that makes an impact – the Thomas Sanderson wooden shutterspictured here come in a range of matte paint and wood stains, so why not opt for a monochrome design, as shown above, or a more colourful choice to liven up a neutral room scheme?
Dilemma: Extra tall, super wide or awkward-shaped windows that are impossible to style. Solution: Invest in bespoke shutters or custom-made blinds that are made specifically to fit the shape of your tricky windows. Whether they are unusually tall, arched or angled, individually crafted shutters are built with expert precision to fit any window space, while made-to-measure blinds can also be handcrafted to your exact specifications. This coffee table by MTH Woodworks is called Bloom and is made from tree stumps salvaged from logging industry waste. Designer and company owner Michael Host dries the stumps for a year, then burns them using shou sugi ban, a Japanese technique that makes the pieces durable and fire-resistant. The white top is made from a non-toxic resin and all the hardware is created from scrap metal. Even the wood chip waste produced in making the tables is used: it’s mixed with beeswax to create natural fire-lighters. Adz could you make these?
