Ring of wood inside the pit

I am not familiar with placing the wood pieces inside the fire pit. Is it structural or for looks? How has the wood held up with fire pit use?

    Hi! They're actually fire bricks, which we installed to avoid cracks in the actual stone which would be caused by the extreme heat. I'm glad we used them- the fire pit will be 4 or 5 years old this summer and the top is beginning to crack from heat, but no signs of issues on the base of the fire pit. :)
