I need help adding colour to my room.

Hello, I'm redecorating my room, and this is my first time doing such a thing. I'm a young male, so obviously I'm not the greatest at it. I'm not sure what colour I should add to it. As you can see it's very beige. I have a painting on the way "Misty Mood, by Leonid Afremov". It's mostly different shades of blue, with red and yellow. I'll place it on the chair side wall. I'm going to get some decorative pillows. What colours would work best? Also, what other accessories do you think I could add?

A rich golden yellow would compliment your artwork.

I think as well as adding life to the room with a different wall colour, you need to add some textures. But you have a great base to work from - well chosen sofa, floor, fireplace, etc. Great! The colour I would suggest you use in this space is called Sedgemoor by a company called Francesca’s Paints. I know you can’t get them over there in Ireland, but I have posted a picture of a room painted in this shade - perhaps you can get Dulux to colour match if you like it? You could then add a few cushions in natural colours, like dark brown, and possibly something like this from John Lewis: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-luce-cushion/p519627?colour=Blackberry. I would also add some pattern/texture/interest into the scheme through cushions - I really love the idea of layering up a pile of these, like in the photo on the Heal’s website (also posted): http://www.heals.co.uk/content/ebiz/heals/invt/583041/583041_l1.jpg. Then another thing you could do is add a rug, I would probably go for a textured brown one like this tonal rug from Habitat http://www.habitat.co.uk/mohit-large-brown-tonal-rug-170-x-240cm/rugs//fcp-product/24124. Wow, I didn't expect so many responses, thank you so much for your time and ideas. I do know that the art is wrong but had to put something up from our last house while we settle in. I do find the fireplace a bit un-friendly and so I would consider changing the colour of it even just the border of it like one of the photos shows. I'm not keen on the small computer cabinet or the ladder shelving I have to admit. I was thinking more of putting 3 full width cherry wood shelves, bottom one being wider and desk height, changing the light fittings to down lights and maybe having a wallpaper or painted backdrop behind the shelves?? I realise I would have to get rid of or change the wallpaper on the other wall and change the curtains too. I take your point, many of you said it, about the curtains needing to fall straight, but I will need a wider pole to do that. This is where I'm at right now. I still need to get a bed skirt, light fixture(I'm thinking a glass blown orange pendant) I think a little orange added to the room would look good with the teal pillows, and the painting. New bed side tables( the ones I have are makeshift from other rooms), new curtains and find a paint colour. Also, some wall art would be nice. I'm thinking a contemporary mirror in a bunch of pieces on different angles, across from my bed. Thoughts??

great job! you've been working! now.. how do you feel about the room thus far? what feels right and what doesn't?

As for using a cluster of mirrors, I think it would depend on the cluster. I love the sunburst style and think with the lights in the painting having somewhat the effect, you might do well to emulate that. I still like the idea of a buttery creamy yellowish white for your walls. Something that would match the lightest or second lightest tone in the painting where the lights are shining. Your room has only the one window, if I remember, and that would help with brightening and lightening it up.

The two pictures you have on each wall in the corner by the chair would probably play better together if they could reach each other. You could hang the vertical one to the left, the horizontal with the top of it even with the top of the vertical and some type of narrower metal art under the horizontal one to fill up the space. The grouping will be more important looking and not look like each piece is too undersized for the wall it's on.

The wall where the horizontal picture is now is your future mirror wall correct? I'll scoot off and see what I can find that I think would be interesting for you. Be back in a bit.

I love the movement of the first one and the mood. It seems so much like the Afremov to me with the sweeping strokes and the feel of windy night. The others were just a little on the different side (well ok, a lot different) that what people usually use and thought you might find them interesting.

Thanks a lot! Yes I've been looking at some star burst mirrors. The pictures locations are temporary for now. Until I figure out what I want to do with the wall. I like the idea you've given me. I'll do that. As for what I don't like: The paper light in the corner. I'll get rid of it and get a better one. The bed side tables. I'm gonna want two to match, and also get two table lights that match as well. I wanna do something above my t.v Also, I don't like the curtains. For what I like: The painting of course. I got a steal on my headboard. So very pleased with that. The throw really brings my bed together so I love that. It matches all the pillows, headboard and furniture in my room. You can't really see my bed sheets, but they're the same as my pillow cases of course and I love them. They're Ralph Luaren and goes it well with everything. My ottoman/coffee table/chest is great. I'ts really versatile and matches the headboard well.

Mark you're terrific! I look the darker tone but what about something less brown? Would that be too much?

The Glisten Yellow was in the shades I was talking about earlier. Looks like Mark went between it and the Marigold. Good job!

boshink... just want to voice my concern with getting too dark. As you can see to the left of your painting in Mark's example, you get back to an almost brown tone in the shadows. If you like that, great! If you want to keep the shadows a bit brighter, maybe go a couple of shades lighter than Mark's but darker than the Glisten Yellow. Just a thought.

Hi Boshink. You are doing a great job, with great assistance -- I like what you like. Sorry not to have been back after my hit-and-run at the start of the thread; time gets gobbled up sometimes. I love the swirly mirror RNGP posted; I'd give that some serious thought if I were you. And Iike Mark's gold walls, if they don't make the room too dark. Nothing to add right now, so this is just a "well done" from me.

I know that everyone is encouraging you to go with more vibrant colors for your walls, but I do feel that a bedroom should be quieter. It's your place of sanctuary at the end of a long day. You can bring in all the vibrancy through accessories, bedding, etc. I think Mark's suggestion of a buttery yellow paint color for the walls is great, and my personal favorite is 'Honeymoon' (AF-345). I've used it in my own home office and bedroom. Houzz describes it as...'A golden yellow with brownish undertones, honeymoon can give any room a snug, cozy feeling and, depending on the lighting, it can be used as a rich, deep neutral beige'.It's a really lovely color and I would recommend ordering an actual paint chip because computers don't translate color very well.

You can play up this warm color on your walls by investing in new woven fiber shades for your window. Hunter Douglas has a really good selection. I'd investigate the 'Alustra Woven Textured Romans'. I specify these quite a bit in fabric: Primal, color: Agate.

Since you also wanted to bring more orange into the room, here are some fun and inexpensive table lamps you might think about. You can purchase these through my favorite website www.lightinguniverse.com. #Ashanti table lamp. At 27" height, these will make a big statement on either side of your bed.

Good morning boshink... Apparently, my brain worked a bit on your lighting problem while I was sleeping and left me thinking of pendant lighting instead of table lamps for the sides of your bed. Since the area that you have is quite limited, I quite agree with my brain's nighttime musings. I have attached a few ideas for you to check out. I really like that metal 'Gota" Pendant. Though, do you think I'd be better off with a flush ceiling mount given that my room isn't that big?

I'm thinking that you hang one on each side of the bed so that you don't give up nightstand space for a lamp. I love the Gota too and think it pulls in the orange you want without being "in your face orange". Does all that make sense?

In many houses, I have only once had sconces above the bed instead of lamps on the nightstand, and I loved it. I think two lamps hanging from the ceiling above the nightstands is a gorgeous idea.

What are your favourite online stores?? I look at gilt, myhabit, thefind and etsy. Any others that I should add??

I found the Gota lamp at dotandbo.com. I like bellacor, lamps plus and universe lighting as well. For art, I usually start at art.com. Fabrics, I use fabricsonline.com; warehousefabricsinc.com to start. My typical way of shopping online is to type in what I want and then look at the images to see if anything is there that I like. Then I move to that site and see what else they have. If I see something on Houzz I like, I will use the name of that item in a search to find it. I like to find things that aren't on the beaten path but then sometimes the well trod path is the one to take so I bounce around all over the place.

There are also places like hayneedle, wayfair, overstock.com. that often have some good items at good prices. Rugs I start with selectrugs.com. It's really just a mad search until you find just the right thing.

Love, love, love OneKingslane.com, DotandBo.com, and Gilt.com. I also use ABC Home and Carpet a lot for ideas, sort of pie in the sky stuff, but still...
Onekingslane is good for are more traditional or rustic/chabby chic stuff. But they've got some great art prints!! They tend to be a bit pricey tho.
DotandBo is a great, new resource I found. They've got some good price points that are pretty reasonable for a young gal like myself. I also like their stuff because its a bit younger than some of the other sites... Nice lamps, pillows, mid-century mod furniture, etc.
Gilt has nice rugs, bedding, lighting sometimes, and kids furniture! Hope this helps!

Nice one Mark. I live in Canada so my room gets cold. How about this across from my bed. The wall is pretty bare, so it'd take up some space. Perfect spot next to my chair for reading.

Yeah at least I'm in the most temperate part of Canada, Vancouver. So, I shouldn't be complaining. I hope you're not from the Peg! I also came across a pillow today. Is that to "Tealy"? The borders hit the painting pretty well.

I love these suggestions! Am awaiting two Leonid Afremov paintings...one is a surprise...I am sure I will love it....here is a pic of the one on the way! I am so ready for color in my very beige living room!
