Help! I don’t like the tiles

last year

These tiles were bought in a hurry ages ago and didn’t get round to putting them up until recently (right after I have gone off grey). I have to live with them, but at least they are to your left as you come in and not the first thing your eye is drawn to. The wall with the vanity unit is the first thing you notice.
We have a million tile samples but I’m thinking of having a column of ocean blue (dark blue but not navy) tiles behind the vanity unit. I’ll see if I can post a photo of what it would look like. Our bedroom is blue with a big painting of the ocean, so it would flow from the bedroom to the en-suite. And then a round mirror on top of the tiles. I might even over size the mirror to come outside the lines of the column of tiles (husband will need convincing). Maybe a gold mirror, as I have black and gold accents throughout the house. Husband wants to tile the whole room though.

Any advice? What would you do?

I very much like the grey tiles and think putting in a different tile over the vanity looks botched. Personally I think you should stick to the grey tiles.

Separately I hate blue in bathrooms- I feel it’s an overload of water and often looks cold and sterile. If you want to continue the bedroom theme consider if your ocean needs a beach, choose a sand colour for the walls that are not tiled and choose a wood style floor. Personally I think the mirror should be one of the colours you already have in the room such as the white of the porcelain, steel of the tile trim or wood to match the vanity.

I like your tiling. Looking closely it has several soft neutral shades within the pattern such as taupe, white, along with the grey. I think a column above the sink, up to the ceiling, with a mirror on it could work, you just need to get the colour right. I saw these hex tiles in a greyish mix which may go. I love the warmth of the wooden vanity unit, so choose a wood trimmed round mirror. I wouldn’t tile all round, that can look cold and sterile. I would paint the walls in a very pale grey or taupe such as Ammonite by F&B. The second pic is Ammonite, but not in a bathroom!

Well, you could certainly provide some counter height stools without adding onto the counter. I would make the stools simple ones that don't call attention to themselves. Look at how the ones below are there to be sat upon but there's no overhang. The height you will need is called a counter stool. Or you have space for 2 at each end of the island with just a big of an overhang. People just like a place to perch while they chat with you while you're cooking. White stools would blend right into the island and be inconspicuous.

It is a gorgeous room with lovely features. I would second Minnie's colour choices, I have Farrow & Ball Pale Powder in my bedroom and it is a gorgeous colour - like an Eau de nil but changes colour throughout the day and is very soothing. I have dark wooden floors and dark brown leather sofas like you and I think I'm going with Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light when I come to decorate to give everything a lift, a pale rug is also a great idea. The cabinets you mention I would choose white to go with your existing bookcase and also to keep things light against the walls. This is currently my inspirational living room pic, the walls are borrowed light.

I would look at the upscale vinyl flooring like karndean which comes is every conceivable finish and is very easy to keep clean and is very hardwearing and practical for a kitchen.

I think the tiles in the shower are fine, but would not tile the whole room. Behind the sink I'd just do one big tile - does that fit across the whole width of the sink? Just to act as a backsplash where it's needed, rather than a big feature. Paint the rest of the room a pale neutral that has the same undertones as the tile - which look like a green-grey on my screen, so maybe something like Little Greene's Slaked Lime (or one of the variations of it - Slaked Lime Mid, for example). Flooring also an issue, but that could be a few different things, not sure if you have something in mind or not.

I can’t see how tall the ceiling is but could you continue the shower tile behind the loo at ”half” height and then have ”half” height white kit kat tiles across the whole vanity wall (laid horizontally) as shown in the photo. I I might also go for a wood floor to warm upthe grey and add colour with accessories

Personally I like the tile, which has been nicely fitted too. I'd stick with it for a small splashback, and then just accessorize nicely - picking up your blue palette by all means.

The good thing about grey is that its neutral, so really you could pair almost any colour with them successfully. Like others have said, a small and simple splashback above the sink would work, and not tiling the rest of the room as its not necessary where there are no splashes. Then you could use a paint colour to the walls to add in drama, or colour, or whatever kind of vibe you want. The other big surface to consider is the floor. Again you could add in pattern / texture / colour here if you wanted to create a particular look. Once you've accessorised and finished the rest of the space those grey tiles could look really good.

How about getting a large mirror cut to size to go from the vanity all the way to the ceiling and don’t have tile.

Hi, the tiled column idea worked for us but consider IF you take that route, remove the vanity unit first allowing for the column from floor to ceiling then centrally re fit the vanity unit, this may balance the room (shower area with the vanity unit wall) along with a light colour painted finish on the remaining areas.

As for the mirror keep the same width as the tile - the vanity unit manufacturer may also provide the same material / colour mirror matching the cabinet again balancing the room .

You have used a trim at the edge of the shower tile use this same trim either side of the column to finish allowing to draw your eye away from depth on the tile .

Don’t be too disheartened with the work and materials used, what you have achieved its all looking good - btw
