Should I paint stair treads white?

I will have a carpet runner but am worried that white paint on the treads each side of the runner will get very dusty/ chipped with a busy and very messy household

I wouldn’t have white. I’d try to leave them as a timber finish to avoid chipping showing.

I think that better colors would be gray (more or less light, depending on how large is your room) or white. Other colors that match with a mix of black and white would be strong colors as red or green, but I think they are too colorfully to pain living walls. In my opinion the best one is white, although it sounds banal, but it would emphasize your wallpaper and wouldn't condicionate the rest of the decoration.

You say you plan on having a toy area under the window. I suggest that which ever color of paint you choose for the hallway, make sure it can be washed easily. Children are hard on hallway walls.
