Help! Awkward shaped sitting room
I am hoping you design conscious beautiful people of houzz will help with my living room. The room is awkwardly shaped and looking for inspiration to make it work for both me and my husband and the kids.
The room is fairly big but only has one unobstructed wall but has a pathway in front of it to the archway of the dining area. The other wall has fire place in the middle, the other was a bay window area and the last wall is the arch for the dining room.
At the moment I have 1 couch and a cuddle chair almost blocking the arch. The images below show what it is like at the moment.
Am thinking of having a corner sofa where the big sofa is now. Then do away with the big cuddle sofa near the arch. I then plan to move the tv to the left side of the fire place. Add a window seat to the window with storage for kids toys , put colourful round rug by the right side of the fireplace with a child's arm chair, sort of making that side a kids area.
Is what am planning ok? Wouldn't want to spend money doing it and find out am worse than I started in making the room stylish.
Any advice is appreciated

Comments (16)My 2¢ worth: first of all replace the dark blinds with translucent cordless single cell blinds in ivory or off-white--they let light through and provide privacy + some insulation from cold or heat. Clean, crisp look.That alone will brighten up this space. #2: clear the counterspace!--so much clutter! Where to put all these appliances that get little daily use? Get yourself a ss 24x20 or larger cart on wheels (see Amazon.com--Seville classic ss cart) and store little used, bulky appliances on its shelves--and roll the cart into a nearby coat closet--out of sight and way-- to be wheeled back when needed or individually carried back as needed. 3#gorgeous blue tiled walls.Don't touch them. #4:Walls: keep as is if off-white--not same as trim white white.Just a fresh coat needed.To make it "disappear," paint the radiator the same color as the wall behind it. #5Keep the white trim white--looks bright and clean.Keep kitchen door white. You might want to stop here and make no further changes #6Cabinets: I like Gast pic above on right, but too much blue for your blue-tiled kitchen...IMO. I'd go cooler and lighter...consider the light gray of the beadboard in the Gast pic above right. Beautiful hue. Don't go for the white white everyone clamors for these days.Too stark for your kitchen and too contrasty with the blue tile, too country kitchenish. #7. cabinet hardware: Look like glass knobs in pics. Go for knobs/pulls like in the Gast pic above--or similar in pewter or ss, my preference. Those "modern" ss bar handles don't work with your cabinets. #8 the round table is not a good fit against the wall. Get a small sq or rectangular ss or butcherblock-top table for that spot. Chop off the top tier of your chairs to shorten....and match their tops as they are now so's won't appear to take up so much visual space and still remain comfy--don't replace w/ uncomfortable stools.Keep white. #9. Do away with wood valance over sink window.Too country. #10 Countertops--solid color Corian type or laminate--depends on budget--don't want busy stone textures of quartz, etc. Consider a medium value cool gray. (Or maple butcherblock?). Can't see color/texture of floor.... hope some of this helps. If you're open to big changes, especially if you plan on replacing the fireplace, you could install a lower mantle, and install the TV above it on a swing arm. This way, the TV and fireplace will remain the focus in the centre of the room, while still being able to view the TV wherever you deem most comfortable on any given day. I think the oblong shape of the room would allow for a couple different seating arrangements. Looking at the second image (fireplace on the right), imagine a compact love seat with it's back facing the double doors. Across from the love seat, 2 accent chairs, backs facing the photographer. Add a coffee table of your choice, and you now have a conversation space in front of the fireplace that is also ideal for watching TV. Thinking about the space behind the love seat, closest to the double doors; a half-height, full-width bookshelf would be lovely along the right wall (left of the fireplace), or even a cushioned bench seat with storage underneath, or both! One orientation to the right of the fireplace, and one to the left. Behind the love seat you could place a console table with lamps and accent decor that would create a visual division, making each seating area seem more intimate and purposeful. Comments (8)From the looks of things, that really is the only place for the sectional. So...can you pull it out just a foot maybe away from the window? Move your tv over the stove if safe to do and try a big plant in that corner where the tv is now. Your painting behind some is way too big for that wall. Move to opposite wall. I would remove the black loves eat and replace with two reading chairs and maybe that end table you have by the sofa. For window treatments I just do not see drapes/curtains working in this room with that sectional....See More

@Jonathan the sofa will not go in to the bay and will block it. The bay currently holds a footrest with the kids toys and blocking it will make it more difficult to access it.
@peggy do you mean storage like this? am always worried it will make the room look more traditional while am looking for more modern look

4 years agoHi Asa. No I agree the photo you showed was too traditional. I meant more like the Ikea storage range. We have Besta units under our TV and floating shelves above they have lots of variations including wall mounted cupboards with clear glass fronts if you don’t want it to look too heavy.

4 years agoMade.com do good floor cushions, pouffes and ottomans although if you want to keep your love seat and it fits then try it with that first and see how it works.
