I'd like to decorate the wall behind our mantle as well as the mantle. What suggestions do you have? I was thinking about a mirror...what size/color would look best? Thank you!

Yes, you need a mantle. You currently do not have one. First get a mantle, then add the artwork.

I hope you can talk her out of that. The walls are beautiful and there will be glue to remove and a price to pay if you ever want to go back. Most people are removing their paper not putting paper up. Many houses have dated paneling and don't look this nice around the fire place. I still think the middle area would look good grey to match the grey around the opening of the fire place. It would look like a visible chimney. I do like lofts/ industrial looks so this appeals more to me than some people. Show her pictures of red brick walls in loft studios and what they are doing with colors on the interior walls and she can get ideas of what color she wants. This probably sounds odd to you but I l like the dirty spot on the bricks. I wish some pros would weigh in.

Snan, The bottom oval one in Eskandari's photos would also work in your room (or something like that). The oval shape visually gives height to the room which would work for you as well. I know that shopping around can sometimes be exhausting, but if you were up for the search that would be another option if you're not sure about the round one you have already. I would also look for something that combines the elements of your wallpaper as well as your fireplace (if you are not planning on changing it) in order to bring those together, i.e. try to bring in the color tones of the two.

If you have the budget, I would build some kind of wood frame and mantel for the brick, similar to these. Any carpenter should be able to handle it.

What does your furniture look like? Decide on style then you can figure out what to do with the fireplace. I don’t see anything interesting a mirror would reflect so art would be better. You don’t have much height over the top of fireplace so you might need to layer several pieces across mantel with perhaps a vase and some greenery. But as I said, first figure out style.
