dark barn board

I am buying a house that was built in 1970.The basement has dark stained barn board.I do not want to take it all off and sheetrock all the walls.Any ideas?

I am in Europe - just so I understand you are talking about old barn board that is so much in fashion right now that they are selling wallpaper of it at hugely expensive prices?

You really need to post pictures so we can help you but my first reaction is definitely to keep it and work with it.

Haven't passed paper yet...I will post pictures as soon as I do. It is a room that has only one window so it makes the room so dark..I will post as soon as I can.I would love to work with it But, I am stumped..

I love colors and most of your plan sounds fun and great but...that paint color looks very purplish and i would say maybe go lighter, more grey tone. Be cautious.

basement room with lovely inglenook fire and stove, need ideas for couches/seating etc. Room has 2 sets of double doors, one into the kitchen the other into the garden and a further single door into the hallway. The stove is back, the inglenook has 3 grey granite slabs and the back of the fireplace is yellow dolphins barn brick. any ideas for seating, lighting and flooring. The room is very dark.

From the looks of things, that really is the only place for the sectional. So...can you pull it out just a foot maybe away from the window? Move your tv over the stove if safe to do and try a big plant in that corner where the tv is now. Your painting behind some is way too big for that wall. Move to opposite wall. I would remove the black loves eat and replace with two reading chairs and maybe that end table you have by the sofa. For window treatments I just do not see drapes/curtains working in this room with that sectional.

I agree - paint or paper the chimney breast in that burgundy/red shade of the fire surround tiling. Your curtains are lovely - methinks I'd be choosing a throw to match for the sofa + chairs, and I see you already have red cushions to accessorise.

Can you paint it? We painted our dark board ceilings bright white, and it lightened the room while preserving the character:

If you want to work with it - start working on introducing lots of lighting - that will be essential. Any reflective surfaces such as mirrors, metallics and sheens will also help.
