Need help for garden

We have just bought a house on an acre which has a mix of mature deciduous and evergreen trees. It's quite overgrown and woodland like with daffodils, crocuses and bluebells all making an appearance. Suggestions as to how to enhance the theme without feeling we are living in a forest please.

It might be an idea to get a local arboriculturist to assess the trees before planting anything. If they've not been looked at for a while there may be some thinning, branch removal, felling to be done. They will also advise if any have disease. Then see what you have left.

Some thinning can increase light levels and moisture enabling you to plant more varieties of plants and create character areas in the garden. Shade areas with ferns or sunny glades. Japanese azaleas work well on the fringe. Swathes of cyclamen look beautiful. Generally, large swathes of the same plant looks more natural, as it gives the appearance the plant has colonised naturally. Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

This is our space and while I want to keep a lot of the green, in would love an area for bbqing and a fire pit area and maybe a nice fun feature for my kids. As you can see from the photos, we have an area that is fenced off and that is going to be raised vegetables beds. we live in a very rocky area. Because my husband has the area outside our back door cemented, there will be steps going down into the garden behind that swing set.please help with pictures please as I have a problem visualising due to a car accident. Thank you in advance ☺
